People think Netflix ‘downplayed’ real reason mum catfished daughter, and there’s ‘proof’

It’s nothing to do with Lauryn

Netflix’s new documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is about one of the most shocking catfishing cases in history, and people think the film totally “downplayed” the real reason mum Kendra catfished her daughter.

A police investigation was opened after Michigan teen Lauryn Licardi was bombarded with more than 10,000 messages from an unknown number while at high school, and it shockingly turned out to be her own mum sending them.

Nobody really knows why she did it. Kendra herself says in The High School Catfish it started from wanting to protect her daughter, while others think she has was suffering from a rare syndrome called Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

However, many are convinced the real reason the mum catfished her daughter is actually because she was obsessed with Lauryn’s boyfriend Owen. The Netflix doc briefly mentions this wild theory, but brushes over it – and people think there’s proof.

Kendra didn’t only bombard Lauryn and Owen with messages, she also went after Owen’s new girlfriend after they broke up. Why else would she do that, other than being totally obsessed with the teenager?

In a viral Reddit post, someone wrote: “Why did Kendra go after Owen’s new girlfriend, a full year after he and Lauryn broke up? That isolated single detail proves this had absolutely nothing to do with protecting her daughter and everything to do with her own predatory obsession with Owen. Owen’s mom tried to point it out, but they barely gave her a voice.

“It feels like the real story was ‘predatory mum coach’ but decided ‘high school catfish story’ was way more marketable. It’s like they are deliberately downplaying the darkest part of this story and perpetuating Kendra’s misdirection/manipulation.”

Everyone is agreeing in the comments. One person wrote: “This was actually so disgusting. Every time I saw Kendra shed a tear I couldn’t help but roll my eyes because who does this to their own kid? She was obsessed with Owen. The end.”

“She had concocted some delusional story about her and Owen being made for each other and that Lauryn was the only thing standing in her way,” someone else argued.
