Drag Race’s Willam reveals what Sabrina Carpenter was like at VMAs behind the scenes

Drag Race icon Willam has had quite the week. Alongside other legendary RuPaul’s Drag Race queens like Denali, Symone and Laganja Estranja – Willam was asked to perform on stage with Sabrina Carpenter during her performance of her new single Tears from the number one new album Man’s Best Friend. It’s been a huge opportunity for Drag Race stars to step into the mainstream in an era where it feels like the political climate is once again doing everything possible to demonise queens. Sabrina Carpenter did not only let the queens perform on stage with her, but she used her performance to be vocal about trans rights and be vocal on the big VMAs platform. Icon. Willam has now revealed what working with Sabrina Carpenter at the VMAs was actually like behind the scenes and it’s so wholesome.

In a comment on Instagram, Willam explained how Sabrina Carpenter was not only invested but checked in a lot to see that the queens are happy. Willam said “Sabrina Carpenter was the only celebrity I ever worked with in 26 years of drag who said ‘you all like your outfits and are happy?’ She cared. She was cool. What a treasure of a week to work with her and her team.”

The Drag Race featuring VMAs performance with Willam was applauded for not only featuring queer performers but for Sabrina Carpenter using her platform to raise awareness on how hard it is out there for LGBTQ+ people – specifically trans folk. Willam also was pictured at Sabrina Carpenter’s afterparty – so it was cool she hung out with the queens after the show too.

Willam’s appearance with Sabrina has been a major talking point in particular because it’s been the first time in years that official Drag Race channels on social media have acknowledged Willam’s existence. Willam is an outspoken critic of World of Wonder and has had a volatile argument with RuPaul in the past – so the show generally doesn’t acknowledge her at all. Because of the work with Sabrina, videos have made the official Drag Race channels featuring Willam for the first time in absolutely YEARS.
