Miley Cyrus reveals shocking real reason she didn’t sing Hannah Montana songs for 14 years

It’s not just because she didn’t want to

| UPDATED

Everyone went crazy this month when Miley Cyrus was filmed singing The Climb at a private concert in LA, and she’s just revealed the real reason she didn’t sing Hannah Montana songs for so long.

It turns out, her contract meant she wasn’t actually allowed to sing any tracks from the show or movies after she left Disney Channel in 2011. How crazy!

Speaking on The Ringer’s podcast this week, she revealed: “After I left Disney, I wasn’t allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music.”

“It’s not like I wanted to, I mean performing The Best Of Both Worlds between We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball, wouldn’t have really made sense. But it was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them.”

However, after being inducted as a Disney Legend, the singer was given permission to perform all the songs in the future, which she said is “pretty cool”.

Miley Cyrus became the youngest-ever person to receive Disney Legend status in 2024. The prestigious Hall of Fame award is given to people who “made a significant impact on the Disney legacy” by The Walt Disney Company.

The award was created in 1987 and traditionally given out annually at a special private ceremony, but it has been awarded every other year at Disney’s D23 Expo since 2009.

Miley adorably dedicated her award to “Hannah and all of her amazing, loyal fans” and to everyone who has made her dream a “reality” in her acceptance speech.

“I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana because she made Miley in so many ways,” she said before quoting the “legend herself” and saying: “This is the life.”

Being awarded the prestigious title means she is now able to perform Hannah Montana songs whenever she wants, so hopefully we’ll be hearing more Disney tracks from her in the future.
