A rundown of all the wild Miley Cyrus scandals she had with Disney back in the day

Now she’s gearing up for what I cautiously declare will be her magnum opus – the looming visual album Something Beautiful – it’s clear in everyone’s eyes that Miley Cyrus is one of the greats. A truly transitional child star into a music industry force with a voice for the ages, she’s just godly. But thanks to a handy thread on Twitter to remind us all, it actually wasn’t all plain sailing for Miley Cyrus. In fact, there was an era when one of the biggest Disney exports became Disney’s menace, and they were fuming at pretty much everything Miley Cyrus did with scandals after scandals. Here’s a rundown of them all!

Her Gmail got hacked and her personal pictures got leaked (2008)

The first of the Miley Cyrus Disney scandals came when intimate photos Miley Cyrus had taken were leaked without her consent. It’s so sad that she got so much backlash for this when it was an invasion of her privacy.

A controversial shoot (2008)

The next came when a then 15 year old Miley did a shoot with Annie Liebowitz for Vanity Fair. The shoot was so controversial because she’s topless with a big sheet around her. At the time, Disney denounced the cover and it began their first conflicts with Miley – who was in the midst of her Hannah Montana heyday at the time.

It resulted in Miley apologising to her fans and declaring she was “embarrassed.”

She got called out for ‘mocking’ Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato (2008)

Miley Cyrus and her friend Mandy posted a video where they seemingly, almost line for line, copied a video that her fellow Disney stars Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato had posted. They later deleted the video and said “imitation is flattery” – but despite the fact they deleted it you can obviously still find it on the internet.

She ‘pole danced’ at the Teen Choice Awards (2009)

Whilst Miley was only 16, she caused a stir when people thought she “pole danced” at the Teen Choice Awards. Obviously, this was on Nickelodeon – so Disney did not sign off on it. Disney released a statement saying that “the network won’t be commenting on the performance”. Neither did Miley – until years later when she (quite iconically) said that she used the pole “for stability”.

The bong saga (2010)

A video got leaked to TMZ of Miley smoking from a bong. The video is infamous. Miley released a statement, saying “I’m not perfect. I made a mistake and I’m disappointed in myself for disappointing my fans.” She then also revealed that because of this video leaking she lost a lucrative deal with Walmart.

Can’t Be Tamed (2010)

One of the most notorious of all the Miley Cyrus scandals was how fuming Disney were with her after she released Can’t Be Tamed and its accompanying music video. It was Miley’s first proper step into maturing her image and distancing herself from her family friendly Hannah Montana image – but she was still only 17.

Years later, someone who claimed to be a former Radio Disney employee said that as soon as Miley Cyrus released Can’t Be Tamed the parent company put an immediate stop to Radio Disney playing Miley’s songs or even mentioning her name.

“I’m not kidding when I say that the NEXT DAY after this dropped Disney made us cancel EVERYTHING that was
connected to Miley Cyrus,” user @joseonyx tweeted.”No radio play. No mentioning her. NOTHING.”

It was all going off in 2010, when Miley Cyrus is spotted necking off with Avan Jogia from Victorious. People always tried to call her out for “underage drinking” because she was pictured having alcohol in Spain. Someone PLEASE tell the yanks right now that in Europe you can drink legally at 18 as a matter of urgency.

She’s caught having a cheeky cig (2011)

I mean, fair play – who can resist a sweet bit of niccy rush? People were mad, though – because she’s previously said in her Miles To Go book that she would never smoke a cigarette.

Miley loses a film role after pretending to lick a penis birthday cake (2012) 

TMZ once again cause a scandal after they get pictures of Miley Cyrus pretending to lick a massive penis shaped cake that she’d got for then boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. Miley explained that Hotel Transylvania sacked her from her voice role in the film because of this scandal.

Miley has a nose piercing in the final season of Hannah Montana

Such a stupid one. At least she responded amazingly.
