Lady Gaga issues statement after ‘bomb attack’ threat at her concert of 2.1 million people
Attackers were reportedly armed with ‘improvised explosives’ to target LGBTQ+ people
Lady Gaga broke records this weekend at Copacabana Beach, but amidst a crowd of 2.1 million people, authorities in Brazil prevented a “bomb attack” that was using “minors” armed with improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, Lady Gaga took to the stage in front of millions to perform iconic tracks such as Born This Way, Judas, Abracadabra, and Garden of Eden. But hours before she appeared, police arrested two people believed to be specifically targeting the LGBTQ community at the concert, according to The Guardian.
In the past, such as Taylor Swift’s Vienna concert last year, events were put on hold following a credible threat of violence. In this case, police said nothing of the plot in an effort to “avoid panic” and “the distortion of information.”
“OPERATION FAKE MONSTER | The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice, prevented a bomb attack that was planned to occur at Lady Gaga’s show in Copacabana, South Zone RJ,” authorities said in a Twitter post. “The person responsible for the plan was arrested, and a teenager was detained.”
The group reportedly drew in members by posing as Little Monsters, the name Lady Gaga gives her fans, and one person “had a religious motivation” and “claimed Lady Gaga “was a Satanist.”

“Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you. An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history. I wish I could share this feeling with the whole world…
“Thank you, Rio, for waiting for me to come back. Thank you, little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up, little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster.”
