Five major life lessons every KCL student can learn from The Traitors

Petition for KCL to host an Alexander look alike competition

With enough drama to last us until 2026, the BBC has wrapped up its third season of hit show The Traitors. This experience has changed the lives of its players, gaining experiences they will take with them beyond the show. But what can we, the viewers, gain alongside them?

Here are five lessons from this year’s season of the Traitors that all KCL students should take away with them. Who knows, it may even help you banish a traitor from your own life.

1. Always respect the sisterhood

Take it from fifth place contestant Charlotte Berman, who banished fellow traitor Minah Shannon from the castle. Was this the fatal flaw in her plan? Could she have gotten further with Minah if she stuck to the sisterhood and banished Freddie Fraser instead?

We know the later recruitment of Freddie backfired for Charlotte. His vote for her at the round table planted doubt in finalist Francesca Rowan-Plowden, who later exposed the traitor.

Furthermore, Jake’s theory of a male traitor could not have been further from the truth. He almost allowed Minah to slip under the radar and avoid banishment.

Alongside the brilliant game played by the female traitors, the show has demonstrated the importance of women empowerment. When the sisterhood is betrayed, it could lead to banishment.

2. Don’t judge someone for their occupation or what they study

Poor Kas. As we know, Kasim Ahmed was banished as a faithful in the fourth episode for questionable reasons. A prominent theory as to why he was a traitor was his occupation as a doctor.

Jake proposed: “[He] save lives during the day, [he’s] killing at night, it just makes sense.” His comments led to one of the most iconic moments in the series, in which Kas suggested he was being likened to serial killer Harold Shipman.

All in all, the faithful learned an important lesson here. If not for the judgment of his occupation, Kas could have stayed longer in the castle. Could the faithful have benefited later on from his intelligence? Or, could he have made it to the final as a superb traitor? We will never get to know.

3. Don’t forget to find the joy, even when things are tough

Even when tensions were unbearable, the contestants still found time for a bit of silly. Another iconic moment from the show is when Freddie, after a brutal bashing at the round table, decided to surprisingly show off his gymnastic skills. The random roundoff prompted viewers to comment on the frivolity of his personality. Freddie reminded everyone that at the end of the day, The Traitors is just a game.

Similarly, fan-favourite Alexander Dragonetti’s time on the show was full of so much whimsy. We were treated to his beautiful operatic singing of Sperbu Yur Wur Wur, along side him running fast “like a pony”. His hilarity and caring personality have led to Alexander stealing the hearts of many of the show’s viewers.

So, while deadlines and January exams are important, remember to fully embrace and enjoy the other opportunities around you. Maybe even do a cartwheel in the middle of Bush House. I’m sure everyone will think you’re super cool.

4. Sometimes, it’s better to think before you speak and act

On the after-show, The Traitors Uncloaked, Charlotte spoke about how her fake Welsh accent helped with the game. It forced her to think about what she wanted to say, allowing her to get her thoughts (and lies) across calmly and constructively. It is unfortunate the other contestants were unaware of her fake accent. Freddie could have benefitted from this advice in the 24 hours he was a traitor.

We can’t do an article on the Traitors and not talk about Queen Linda. One fatal head turn in the first minute sealed her fate in Jake’s head. Possibly the two most obvious Traitors the show has ever seen were Freddie and Linda. However, they are excellent examples of why maybe sending that paragraph to your ex-situationship isn’t always the best idea.

5. Leave cliques in 2024

Possibly the most heated moment in the show, with one single word triggering the downfall of three contestants.

If this season of the traitors taught us anything, it is that cliques are NOT it. Leanne, Leon, Tyler, and Livi were later to find out. Their alleged clique-like behaviour in the show caused the group to turn on each other, especially supposed leader Tyler, who was banished after the group was exposed. Is it time to abandon the “you can’t sit with us” mentality? It seems the other 21 contestants believe so.
