Community, ambition and results: An interview with Lancaster’s Careers Advancement Network
Lucy, Head of Marketing and Communications tells us all about the society and how to get involved
The Career Advancement Network (CAN Soc) is a community of experienced students who share their industry experience with other students looking to gain skills and expand their network in their area.
The exec of the society consists of third and fourth year students that have done placement years in their particular subject.
CAN Soc was created to give students who are considering doing a placement year more tangible support and information about what they are actually getting themselves into.
The Lancaster Tab interviewed the Head of Head of Marketing and Communications, Lucy, to find out more.
Although the university gives guidance on placements, this society gives students even more support with face-to-face meetings and other events that help give advice about placement years.
Lucy, the Head of Head of Marketing and Communications, said to The Lancaster Tab: “It’s a really good resource for students looking for internships, and it’s also good for people who have already done placements to put on your CV to show leadership skills.”
CAN Soc has different strains for different subjects so that each student can get advice tailored to what they are going to be doing. The society gives advice on CV writing, finding placements, public speaking and many more skills. There are also many events such as talks with big companies such as PWC and L’Oreal about where your degree can take you as well as collaborations with other societies such as the African & Caribbean Society (ACS).

CAN Soc also gives students the opportunity to meet other people and find a community that can give support while going through your placement and as well as an opportunity to make friends for housing when the placement year is over. CAN also offer a mentorship scheme where you are paired with an experienced member of the society for extra support.
