Only a true northener can recognise these Missing You filming locations in Manchester

Do we think Calligan is a fan of Mnky Hse?

Missing You is the latest Harland Coban series to storm Netflix, and for good reason. Based on the 2014 book, the series follows Kat Donovan, a police detective, who is searching for answers after the murder of her police chief dad, who was killed 11 years before.

Despite being set in New York, the show was actually shot in New York, which is why you might recognise some of the filming locations from in and around Manchester.

The most obvious tell that the series was shot in the north west were the scenes filmed in Deansgate Locks. A lot of the Manchester skyline can be recognised from the opening credits, where the skyscrapers tower above the city. Some fast paced chase scenes were also set in alleys within Deansgate Locks and Northern Quarter.

Scenes were also shot on Hardman Street and around Spiningfields, with a number of bars and hotspots making the cut, including Mnky Hse.

The infamous tram even makes it into the series, with Kat regularly seen hopping about the city on a Metrolink.

James Nesbitt, how can you not love him. A scene between Calligan and Kat was set in Manchester Art Gallery after he asks her to meet him inside the impressive space.

Kat is seen walking through the gallery looking for Calligan, where he’s perched in a room with a particularly famous painting behind him  The Chariot Race by Alexander von Wagner.

The painting is discussed in the show, with Calligan telling Kat about how it portrays all the drama of a Roman stadium. He also eplains how he owns the painting and has loaned it to the museum.

You can only call yourself a true northener if you recognise Kat’s apartment in Missing You as one of the most iconic filming locations in the show.

Whilst it’s supposed to be an uber trendy apartment, Kat’s home is actually filmed inside the historic Knott Mill. The interior of the mill was designed back in 1977 and the space was also once home to the late “Mr Manchester” Tony Wilson.

The design was so iconic that it’s widely recognised as Tony’s Loft, as well as being described as “the original residential loft” of Manchester. They couldn’t include Missing You filming locations in Manchester without featuring it, really.

Stockport

The Missing You filming locations extended all the way out to Stockport, where scenes inside the police station were shot. The entire interior of the station was situated there, with Richard Armitage, who plays DCI Ellis Stagger, claiming it was his favourite location on the series.

Richard said: “Often, they are just mundane sets of banks of computers, strip lighting and low ceilings. Our production designer, Vanessa Hawkins, used this old Victorian building, which I think was once an orphanage in Stockport. It has a balustrade balcony and real height so we have crane shots. You can see the whole of the police station from above and the layering of design within the room.”

Adding that the space felt familiar, he said: “It’s brilliant. I absolutely love Stagger’s office. It reminded me of a scene from Columbo. It’s all dark wood and moody mid-century furniture. It’s so interesting because I think the building was derelict. They did an incredible renovation on it. “
