All the secret meanings behind the Players’ numbers in Squid Game season two
Gi-hun’s number is actually a wild gambling reference
Squid Game 2 already had a million little easter eggs looped into its storyline, from big political ideas to small video game references. Something that’s never really addressed in detail is the meaning behind all of the players’ numbers, which are actually very intentional and give away huge secrets about each character. Here’s an in-depth analysis of all the secret meanings behind the players’ numbers in Squid Game 2.
Player 001 – Hwang In-ho (or Young-il)
Player 001 goes without saying. Number one is the most powerful number, the first number, and the number that was assigned to Oh Il-nam who was the creator of the Squid Game. It seems very suspicious that Gi-hun wouldn’t even question his authenticity after everything that happened with 001 last time?!
Player 007 – Park Yong-sik
My first thought when seeing 007 was James Bond. And that’s what Park Yong-sik wants to be by the end, right? He wants to be brave, earn his money back to pay off his debts and give he and his mother a happy life. But he just can’t seem to get it right. And right at the end of the show, he wants to go off and be part of the action with the other players who are revolting, but his own mother holds him back. His number represents what he wants to be, and I guess we’ll have to wait until season three to see if he lives up to it.
Player 044 – Seon-nyeo
Most Read
Number 44 is a double-digit angel number, which matches up with Seon-nyeo’s spiritual shaman character. When you see this number, it’s a message from your guardian angels and the divine realm to pay attention. It’s a reminder to stay focused, continue your hard work, and build a strong foundation for your future endeavours. Sounds just like the wake-up call she got in the six-legged race.
Player 095 – Young-mi
In the Bible, the number 95 symbolizes humility and compassion. According to Astrology.com, it’s also a manifestation number: “It is a reminder to be kind and compassionate to others, even in difficult situations. The number also signifies spiritual growth and development, as well as God’s guidance and protection.”
This sadly explains a lot about Young-mi. She was a kind girl with a lot of love to give and her humanness (AKA making a mistake and falling over in the Mingle game) is what cost her her life. She was so excitable and emotional and really captured the spirit of being compassionate.
Player 100
Player 100 is also a very straightforward number. There’s not a lot of hidden meaning because 100 is a round, full number. It’s all or nothing with Player 100, and his number symbolises that too. He never once thinks about leaving the games and would rather walk into his own death than see another perspective.
Player 120 – Hyun-ju
Player 120 is a trans woman, Hyun-ju. While the number 120 doesn’t hold that much significance, it might be down to the fact that the US filed 120 anti-trans bills in 2024. It might be a push, but if not, it’s a really powerful coincidence.
Player 222 – Kim Jun-hui
Player 222, Kim Jun-hui, is a young pregnant woman who ends up becoming a part of the games after her former partner, Lee Myeong-gi, abandons her. Her number holds significant meaning as 222 is an angel number, which could mean she’ll be protected and looked after. She’s already been supported by the literal 001, and all of the other main protagonists, and most people would think having her on their team would put them at a disadvantage. There’s definitely some symbolism going on here.
Player 230 – Thanos
Thanos’s number doesn’t have any association with his Squid Game 2 character. However, T.O.P. the rapper who plays Thanos, was part of a K-Pop boyband called BIGBANG that disbanded in 2023. Perhaps the 23 part of his number is a symbol of saying goodbye to his boyband days and looking forward to focusing on new projects like he said he wanted to.
Player 333 – Lee Myeong-gi
Player 333, the bitcoin YouTube king, also has an angel number for his player number. This suggests he’s also going to be under some kind of divine protection, or at least his child will be. And it makes sense because I’m confused as to how he’s made it this far already.
Players 388 and 390 – Dae-ho and Jung-bae
Players 388 and 390 are Dae-ho and Jung-bae, one being a younger marine and another being older (and Gi-hun’s bestie). Their numbers being so close together with such huge odds is pretty significant to the games, and it tightens their bond.
Player 456 – Seong Gi-hun
There are a few meanings to Gi-hun’s number, with the main one being it’s the last number possible. It’s the complete opposite to 001 who has all the power as the Front Man, putting him at the bottom of the ladder. However, number 456 also happens to be one of the names of a Chinese dice game better known as Cee-lo. In the game, you roll three dice to compete against others and the strongest possible roll by far is a 4-5-6. A 4-5-6 ends roll ends the game and you automatically win, like catching the golden snitch. This one HAS to be intentional!
