The Banksy artwork has vanished from Brick Lane in London

The painting of three monkeys was washed away overnight

A piece of art by Banksy in London’s Brick Lane has suddenly been washed away overnight.

The painting was of three monkeys swinging down from a bridge. It appeared in east London in the summer earlier this year. Banksy claimed credit for it on 7th August. The Tab noticed on 5th December that the painting was no longer there.

People spotted workers using jet washers to remove the painting. The workers reportedly didn’t know why they’d been asked to do this.

It is unclear why the decision was made to remove the Banksy painting from Brick Lane in London. A protective cover had previously been placed over the monkeys, which made it look like there were plans to keep the painting where it was.

The three monkeys were part of a series of artworks Banksy painted across London this summer. A painting appeared by London Zoo of a gorilla letting out animals. Various animals then popped up across the city. There’s a goat on the side of a building in Richmond, two elephants on a house in Chelsea, and a pelican by a fish and chips shop. A rhino appeared in Charlton, but was quickly removed.

Banksy’s painting of monkeys created lots of buzz on social media, with people theorising over whether it had a deeper meaning. Some people thought the three monkeys might be a reference to the Japanese proverb “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”.

The Tower Hamlets Council has confirmed to The Tab that they do not own this bridge, and it wasn’t their graffiti removal team who washed away the mural. Network Rail does not maintain this railway bridge, either. The Tab has contacted TfL for clarification about what happened.
