All five defendants were native to the Greater London area and the four sentenced were students at De Montfort University.
Following the crime, the investigation led by the police lasted a few months and included extensive CCTV footage analysis, enquiries and public appeals to aid identification of the defendants.
In a statement, Detective Constable Sean Downey stated: “This incident highlights the serious danger of violent disorder. It is extremely fortunate that further injury was not caused to the people involved or to other members of the public who witnessed the incident. This could have been a very different investigation”.
