Raygun claims she’s still Australia’s best breaker, blaming scores on ‘lack of resources’
The dancer defended her performance in her first interview since the Olympics
After being well and truly dragged on social media after receiving a zero for her performance last month, Olympic Breaker Raygun has defended her routine and explained exactly why she is Australia’s best breakdancer.
In her first interview since the Olympics, Raygun was asked by hosts of the Australian chat show, The Project, “Do you genuinely think you are the best female breaker in Australia?”, to which she clarified “Well, I think my record speaks to that.”
Raygun also blamed a “lack of resources” for the flop results, explaining that Australia need more help in order to beat world champions in the sport.

After removing herself offline following her controversial performance, which saw her kangaroo hopping and sliding across the floor, Raygun spoke about how she dealt with becoming a global meme. The dancer was offered mental health support quite quickly and was told “there’s a bit of a storm brewing on social media” by her social media liaison after she got off stage.
She told The Project host Waleed Aly: “It’s been a pretty wild ride, yeah.
“Fortunately I got some mental health support pretty quickly and I also went off social media, I went off the internet. But is’s pretty up and down but it’s also just hard to process it all honestly, it’s just still pretty hard to process.”
Raygun, real name Rachel Gunn, explained that her score is reflective of Australia’s lack of resources, which meant her performance suffered through no fault of her own. She said: “Unfortunately, we just need some more resources in Australia for us to have a chance to beat world champions.”
Following the social media explosion, Raygun even swiped back at critics who claimed she made a “mockery” of breaking, adding that these people simply don’t understand her “artistic” style.
She added: “You know, historically, unfortunately, we haven’t had the best track record of winning World Championships, so, you know, I don’t think that’s just on me. A lot of the responses, though, is just due to people not being very familiar with breaking and the diversity of approaches in breaking.”
At one point, Waleed also confronted Raygun with claims from hip-hop star Spice that her performance “pushed” breakdancing into the “Dark Ages”, leaving the dancer appearing visibly uncomfortable.
Responding to the claim, the dancer apologised to the entire breakdancing community and said: “Yeah, look, it’s really… It is really, um, sad to – hear those criticisms. I am very sorry for, you know, the backlash that the community has experienced. But I can’t control how people react.”
Following the ordeal and reports of Raygun perhaps being scouted for big TV shows including I’m a Celeb, the 36-year-old revealed she has no plans to compete again in the near future. She said: “I don’t think I’ll be competing for a while. Not really wanting to be in the spotlight, breaking, competing. But I… You know, it’s been nice.
“Like, it’s been a bit of a process to try and start dancing again. Like, that’s actually been tough. You know, it was my medicine, and then it turned into my source of stress!”
But not all of the responses were negative, with many people, including the Australian Prime Minister and head of the Olympic judging panel, speaking out in support of the dancer. Raygun said: “It was so fantastic that the next day the judging chair, MG, came out and explained that in the breaking community what I did actually wasn’t very shocking.
“You know, it’s just a different approach in breaking. You have the athletic-style breakers and you also have the more artistic-style breakers and all of them are very valid.”
In the interview, Waleed even mentions how the viral Raygun Olympics performance was even recreated by chat show host, Jimmy Fallon, who famously mocked her routine on TV. Raygun explained how his segment left her with “mixed emotions”.
“I don’t know whether to, like, hug him or yell at him! Because what a platform he ended up giving me, like, honestly.I haven’t actually seen the sketch ’cause I don’t think I’m in a place yet to watch it, but I will watch it at some point.
“But I’m still in the process of being able to describe how I feel about all this stuff because it kind of feels like a really weird dream that I’ve been having that I’m gonna wake up from at any moment. Like, what is life right now?!”
