Kerching! Here are all the records the iconic Barbie movie has broken since its release
Greta Gerwig is girl bossing hard
The Barbie film encompasses everything we love about women. The balance of feminism, humour and celeb appearances made for an all round cinematic masterpiece. And while Barbie was inspired by dozens of classic films, there just isn’t anything else like it. From all time bops, to pink Pintrest inspiration and just general wholesome girlie vibes, it’s no doubt the film of the summer, and arguably the year. So, loved by both Barbies and Kens alike, it’s clear why Barbie is receiving praise and breaking records everywhere, as Greta Gerwig claims her space as one of Hollywood’s directors to watch. So equally, it’s no surprise to hear of the growing list of Barbie’s broken records after the movie hit the cinemas back on July 21st. Here they all are.
Best Teaser
Hosted on June 29th, Barbie won Best Teaser at the 2023 Golden Trailer Awards in Los Angeles, after being nominated earlier in the month. Since being released back in December, the teaser attracted global excitement, which translated to the absolute carnage in cinemas and across social media last month.
Most Anticipated Film
Confirming what we already knew from the non-stop hype on social media, Barbie also went on to acquire the prestigious status of Most Anticipated Film at the Sixth Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Film Awards before it even came out. Winners were announced on June 30th, almost a whole month before Barbie hit the big screens.
One billion global box office ticket sales
Most Read
Barbie brought in $1billion global box office ticket sales. One billion is an insane figure and ticket sales not only reached this figure, but also broke records for the top female director, placing Greta Gerwig as one to watch in Hollywood. We love to see it.
11th highest-grossing film of all time at domestic box office
Overtaking The Avengers, Barbie continues to climb the ranks, recently becoming the 11th highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office. Let’s go party!
Biggest opening
Considered the first day or days a film is released, Gerwig’s Barbie won biggest opener. Barbie stole the show as biggest opener over its three day opening weekend, Knocking the Super Mario Bros. Movie down to second place.
Biggest opening by a solo female director
Following that, Greta Gerwig’s cinematic masterpiece beat Captain Marvel, co-directed by Anna Boden, as the highest grossing opening weekend for a film directed by a woman. With a while yet until the next Oscars, it’s likely that both Greta Gerwig and Barbie will be strong contenders, with the possibility of Gerwig and Nolan, director of Oppenheimer, competing yet again for Best Director after both being nominated in 2018.
Biggest opening for a toy based film
Steaming past Toy Story, Barbie even landed the biggest opening weekend for a toy based film. Mega.
Biggest opening weekend of any non-sequel in 2023
Barbie also kicked up enough fuss to break the record for the biggest opening weekend of any opening film that’s not a sequel or remake, at $162 million domestically. Which makes sense, as anyone with taste ensured they were booked in with tickets secured way in advance of the big weekend. Move along, Avengers.
Biggest second weekend at domestic box office
Adding another $93 million to its domestic box office, Barbie’s second weekend on screens brought the total up to a whopping $351.4 million. This meant it broke the record for being the biggest second three-day weekend at domestic box office since pre-Covid times, only just beating Super Mario Bros. Movie which held the previous record at $92 million.
Biggest opening week for a Warner Brothers film
Adding another to the list of Barbie’s broken records, the film is being commended for the not only the opening weekend but the whole week. The film brought in a huge $578.5 million in its opening week alone, making it the biggest opening week in history for a Warner Brothers movie.
Biggest Monday ever for any Warner Brothers movie
Adding yet another to the long list of records Barbie movie broke, the film officially landed Warner Brothers its biggest Monday ever, bringing $26 million to the table.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s New World Record
Unsurprisingly, Barbie immediately became both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s biggest ever film at box office. That’s impressive, considering Gosling’s previous highest was Blade Runner 2049 at $32.8 million, and Robbie’s was Suicide Squad at $133.7 million.
Biggest opening for a film without IMAX
Another accolade to the ever-growing list, Barbie also top trumped The Twilight Saga: New Moon to steal the spot as the the biggest opening weekend of all time without any IMAX screens.
Highest grossing film directed by a female director
On Tuesday, August 1st, Barbie also became the highest grossing film directed by a solo female director, with figures set to break the $1 billion benchmark. If that doesn’t perfectly encompass what Barbie is about, I don’t know what does. Gerwig, who previously worked on Little Women, stole the title from Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins.
