New NUSU president Shah Ali loses local council election with second lowest amount of votes
Only the Communist Party of Britain received fewer votes than Shah
Newly elected 2023/24 NUSU President, Shah Yaseen Ali, received the second lowest number of votes for Conservatives in Heaton in yesterday’s local elections.
Shah received a total of 156 votes for the Conservative Party, with Labour holding majority with a total of 1,384 votes.
Green Party received 625 votes, Liberal Democrats received 595 votes, and Communist Party of Britain received 65, meaning Shah received the second lowest amount of votes in the area.
The Newcastle Tab revealed Shah’s conservative candidacy last month, after an announcement made on the Conservative Party Facebook page.
The news was met with dissatisfaction from some students who said this decision was “ridiculous” and questioned Shah’s ability to commit himself fully to both roles. Others said they wouldn’t have voted for Shah if they knew he was a member of the Conservative Party.
In response to these comments, Shah said: “I am proud to have been democratically elected as the President of Newcastle University’s Student Union.
“I believe democracy is a good thing, which is why I have also chosen to stand for the place that I call home, Heaton.”
