TIME’s list of gadgets ‘every student needs’ costs over $2k and I’m over here having sleep for dinner
Can I buy an iPad with meal swipes?
It's back to school time! Which of course among other things, means a deluge of lists, Amazon offers and shitty promo emails telling you the things you need to have to start the new semester.
While it's unclear what would happen if you dared to start school without these essential items, what is obvious is how out of touch big companies are when recommending things for students to buy.
With that in mind Time Magazine – currently only relevant for the occasional cool cover and their person of the year, took it upon themselves to advise all returning students what they simply have to have come the start of classes.
Filled with delicious cliches like "hitting the books" and "summer hijinks", their list costs over $2000 and assumes you already own a laptop, iPad and TV.
So lets have a look through the worst of their super essential items to see if it really holds up to scrutiny from someone under the age of 50.
Amazon Kindle Paperweight -$120

Not only can I not afford books, but frankly I do not have the time, inclination or willpower to get started with a kindle. Also suggesting you can get "all the books you'll need for the semester" feels like they've never had to deal with a professor who assigns his own shitty book you can't buy anywhere.
Apple AirPods -$160

$160 dollars to look like a tool on campus, nooooo thank you.
A frisbee with lights and shit – $25

Ah the old disc on the quad cliché, straight from the 'people of all ethnicities chilling on immaculate grass' playbook. Love to see it, you really do. I don't know what sort of after hours fun the old cranks at TIME have, but let me tell you most colleges get a little bit more exciting than glow in the dark frisbee.
Pretentious camera – $900

From the slightly useful to the completely ridiculous, this is an insult to the very idea of being a student. Who has a spare $900 for a camera? Who is choosing to spend money that could be used for Spring Break or Tuition or rent or utilities or something that could be used for immediate enjoyment. Also sidenote, who is taking pictures on a professional camera then sending them to their phone for Insta, feels like a lot.
A printer! – $130

Not only can this printer not print your homework or assignments or anything of actual real use, the paper alone costs an extra $25 bucks so I mean I guess throw some money at that too?
A case for an iPad you may or may not have – $100

This is actually not for anything you can use unless you already have an iPad, and if you do then sure go ahead and spend $100 bucks on a case that has buttons! and features!
