New footage emerges of Cardiff University rugby team fighting with local residents in pub

One rugby player is repeatedly hit so hard by a crutch that it eventually bends

New footage has emerged of a large fight that broke out between Cardiff University Law Rugby players and local residents at The Mackintosh Hotel last week.

The new video shows a closer angle of the brawl that took place on The Mackintosh Hotel on Wednesday 6th March in which one rugby player can be seen repeatedly being hit by a crutch which eventually bends under the force of the blow.

The students, who are in white shirts and wearing ties, the typical uniform of students who are members of sports clubs at the university, can be seen fighting with a number of Cathays locals wearing dark clothing.

The four second video of the incident which took place somewhere between 6pm and 9pm, starts with around eight to ten men hitting, punching, and pushing each other in the Mackintosh’s beer garden.

A man in dark clothing can then be seen hitting a rugby player with a crutch a number of times whilst two other men throw punches at each other in the forefront of the video.

One man in a white shirt can also be seen being pulled back, whilst another in a blue quarter zip jumper stands in a boxing stance for the length of the video but doesn’t actually get involved.

This comes as a witness, Josh* exclusively told The Cardiff Tab that the fight supposedly started after a local resident began “shouting abuse” at a member of the rugby club committee.

After a “stand off” between the pair, the witness claims that the committee member had a glass “smashed over his head” however the police confirmed there were no reports of injuries.

Josh said the fight started in the pub but moved outside with “20 or so” boys piling on each other.

He told The Cardiff Tab: “The confrontation was sparked by a group of people shouting abuse at [a committee member] for Law Rugby.

“After a standoff between the player and a member of the group, [the committee member] had a glass smashed over his head.

“The fight then went outside where 20 or so boys piled on each other.”

This comes as Cardiff University’s Psychology Rugby was banned from IMG and the Students’ Union for holding a “wife beater” social last month, and Cardiff University’s Rugby team was banned from the Students’ Union for “dangerous behaviour” in the queue for an SU club night earlier in the academic year.

A spokesperson for Cardiff University Law Rugby Team told The Cardiff Tab: “We do not condone violence of any kind, we will be working with relevant parties to review what happened as a priority.”

A South Wales Police spokesperson added: “Police attended a report of a fight at Mackintosh Pub at around 8.15pm on March 6th however those involved had left the area.

“There was no signs of blood or broken glass and there have been no reports of any injuries.”

The Cardiff Tab has contacted Cardiff University’s Students’ Union for comment.
