Women are sharing lists of reasons they don’t want children and the internet is furious

Whether or not women want to have children has always been a contentious topic. And, for the first time this year, more than half of women (50.1 per cent) of women in England and Wales born in 1990 were childless when they turned 30, with many citing financial worries and climate concerns as reasons to swerve motherhood.

But those aren’t the only reasons not to want kids, and women have started sharing lists they’ve compiled about why they don’t want to be parents online— to much uproar from the rest of the internet.

Actress and model, Ellie Gonsalves shared a list of 117 reason why she didn’t want children to her 1.2million followers this week after discussing the topic with a friend. Shockingly cruel backlash ensued, with Ellie being sent messages saying she’ll “die alone” and that she’d be an “unfit mother” anyway, in response.

Ellie explained she’d written the list, which included points like “you become second priority to your partner” and “you are tired all the time”, because she’d been in a relationship for 15 years and was constantly asked when she’d have a baby.

“It always seemed a short reason was never good enough or understood, so this is in more detail for those asking,” she explained in her post. “As an old lady I’m going to be enjoying life with a marg in my hand, going on my hot girl walks with my beautiful husband, 400 Pomeranians, and gossiping with all of the old biddys [sic] about THEIR kids.”

And this isn’t the first time a woman has shared a list of reasons she doesn’t want kids online. On TikTok there’s a user simply known as Girl With The List who has 422k followers and 11.9million likes for sharing reasons for women to stay child free.

The TikTok list has grown so large over months of posting that the account creator has put the points in a Google Doc for women to gain easy access, with everyone tagging their friends to give them fair warning of the pain and terror of pregnancy.

But, despite having thousands of fans, Girl with the List account has been just a controversial as Ellie Gonsalves’ post with commenters saying: “so many people have had children and they are fine, and here u are making a list of worst case scenario things expect it all to happen? #delusional.”

Guess people really aren’t done with having opinions on what women should do with their bodies!
