Educating Yorkshire headteacher claps back at criticism over his 27 year age gap relationship
The pair started dating when he was 49 and she was just 21
The former Educating Yorkshire headteacher, Jonny Mitchell, has responded to backlash over his 27 year age gap relationship after criticism.
The 53 year old starred on Educating Yorkshire more than ten years as headteacher at Thornhill Community Academy with Mr Mitchell separating from his wife in 2014.
He then met 25 year old Abi McMahon, and despite concerns, the pair have stated that their relationship is “completely normal” and they have “so much in common.”
The two met in 2021 when Abi was 21 and Mr Mitchell was 49 during a night out after she accidently spilled her drink on him.
They recalled how they started talking and exchanged numbers, before going on “a few dates” and then started their relationship together.
The pair are very used to criticism about their age gap, with the former Educating Yorkshire star Mr Mitchell telling The Sun: “I’ve been branded a paedophile, a groomer, a dirty old man and far worse.
“I never thought I’d fall in love again let alone with a woman so much younger than me but you can’t legislate who you meet.”
Abi also defended their relationship against backlash, saying: “I’ve been labelled online as a gold digger, an embarrassment and the worst was one who told me to kill myself.
“People will think I must have daddy issues – I definitely don’t. I want people to simply not judge others not so quickly.”
