Gottmik dishes how she ‘clocked producers’ and avoided going home on RuPaul’s Drag Race
'I know what you're trying to do'
When it comes to reality TV, the cameras may never lie, but the editing just might. RuPaul’s Drag Race star Gottmik recently spilt some behind-the-scenes tea on the No Gorge podcast with Violet Chachki, revealing how she thought producers were trying to shape the narrative of the show. From spotting suspicious camera setups to shutting down pressure to share personal stories on cue, Gottmik proved she knows exactly how production works, and isn’t afraid to call it out.
Gottmik shares ‘tell-tale sign’ when Drag Race is over
Speaking on their No Gorge podcast this September, RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Gottmik and Violet Chachki got into it about Gottmik’s time on Drag Race. She said: “You know on Drag Race 101, where it’s like they tell their story? And then they go home?”
Violet asked: “So you’ve never told this?” and Gottmik seemingly responded with what she thinks is a tell-tale sign of someone being headed for the door on Drag Race. “If you don’t know about Drag Race, the second you’re in the mirror going ‘yeah my mom died’, they’re like ‘oh, so she’s going home’ that’s how it works, getting too much screen time.”

As it turns out, Gottmik then went into how she might have access to this kind of information. She explained: “There was one episode on Drag Race where I’ve seen the routine. I was just working on my sh** and I noticed some cameras, I was like ‘hmm odd’.” She said it felt like she was getting a little too much camera time. “I’m getting ready in the mirror, and the producer is like ‘talk about your trans story’ and I go ‘no, I think that’s the last thing we’re talking about’.”
She explained how she opted out of delving into anything on camera, and thought: “I know what you’re trying to do. Let me talk to you guys for a second, I know what you’re trying to do. Don’t play… I’ve worked in production before, I know what you’re trying to do…” Although Gottmik said that production told her “they weren’t trying to do anything,” she joked: “You’re not gonna shake me, I am solid as a rock.” During season 13, Gottmik finished in joint third place with Rosé.
