Every time Law Roach got called out for his ‘unnecessarily cruel’ critiques on Project Runway
Brutal is an understatement
From the moment stylist Law Roach joined Project Runway as a main judge in season 21, his brutally candid critiques have sparked intense reactions. Some people praise his honesty, while others slam his delivery as uncalled-for cruelty. Here’s a look at the standout moments when his sharp tongue rolled back into reality, leaving designers (and viewers) reeling.
‘I hated the whole look’: Law made contestants cry
During the Project Runway season 21 premiere, contestant Jesus Estrada earned a spot in the top three, only to have Law Roach burst out: “I hated it, you’re the only one,” adding: “I hate the whole look.” His blunt outburst visibly broke Jesus, who later admitted tears followed shortly after.
The ‘Nigerian Auntie’ diss and body-shaming backlash
Law Roach on the new season of project runway and saying one the designers made the model look like a Nigerian aunty😭

Liris Crosse, modelling a design by Jesus Estrada, faced harsh judgment not only on the garment but on her body. Law Roach said she looked “like a Nigerian auntie” and criticised the piece for not being flattering. The exchange went viral, and Crosse responded sharply on social media, asserting: “Apparently MY T***IES are the topic of discussion… I felt sexy in it.”
‘F—ing Ugly Clothes’: A snark that crossed the line
As if that wasn’t enough, in episode 3, people saw an all-denim ‘showstopper’ collection delivered by Drag Race‘s Utica AKA Ethan Mundt and his team. Law didn’t hold back in his critique here, either: “I’m really p***ed off about this collection. I did not come here to look at a bunch of ugly f—ing clothes.” His frustration came off less as a critique and more as just being outright rude.
A hostile exchange with Antonio Estrada
This episode of Project Runway, Law pissed me off. Soccer ball and rainbow plastic short set should have been in the bottom. Butterflies should have won and McRae should have been safe. Please never make him sole judge again

We’re not stopping there. In the Disney-themed team challenge, Jesus’ twin, Antonio Estrada, landed in the bottom and questioned whether he was being ‘Punk’d.’ Law cut in, noting: “You keep blaming everything on Christian.” When Antonio snapped back, Law and Nina Garcia labelled him defensive and “a little bit rude.” They warned his reaction came off as “really quite nasty.”
Law went in on Belania
#ProjectRunway why was law roach so rude to Belania this episode 😭 like she’s stating her inspiration and he’s like “no”

In a later episode featuring Belania’s streetwear look, a twist on Audrey Hepburn’s sleek elegance, she earnestly explained that her design was a personal ode to the iconic silhouette. But Roach mercilessly shut her down: “I hated that story.” He argued she should’ve framed the look as an extension of herself instead, not hide behind a celebrity reference. The moment landed cold, especially since Belania still scored her second win of the season.
People aren’t here for Law’s cruel critiques
Law trying to tell the designers how to express themselves based on his PERSONAL opinion is so annoying.
You aren’t the designer so stop policing their form of expression.
Also just b/c they aren’t praising your critiques of their work, doesn’t make them rude!#projectrunway pic.twitter.com/3ZdvRcCbyt

Backlash wasn’t limited to the screen. Within weeks of his debut as a Project Runway judge, people’s outrage boiled over. Some demanded that Law should be fired, branding his remarks “cruel” for inducing tears and emotional distress. And more are calling out for Michael Kors to make a return to the show instead. One person wrote on Reddit: “Truly miss having Michael Kors on the show. Honest opinions about the clothing with zero attack on the person.” Another penned: “And Kors’ advice was always spot on even if it wasn’t what they wanted to hear. It made them better.”
