Influencer admits she’s ‘mortified’ after breaking huge royal rule whilst meeting the King
She broke it not once, but five times!
Influencer and Made in Chelsea icon Sophie Habboo admitted she was left feeling absolutely “mortified” after accidentally breaking a major royal rule five times when meeting King Charles.
Sophie and her husband and former co-star Jaime Laing were invited to the King’s Trust Awards at the end of June, and recalled the mortifying blunder on their Nearly Parents podcast.
They explained that they had been told about the royal protocol they had to follow when meeting the King, being told to “bow your head” or “curtsy” before addressing him as Your Majesty.
Jaime explained that only after that could you call him “Sir” and that they were told under no circumstances to “raise your hand and shake his hand until he raises his hand towards you.”
The pair explained that King Charles was speaking to a couple of other people in front of them, with Sophie Habboo and Jaime being “next in line” to meet him.
However, Sophie kept raising her hand, as she commented: “He kept looking at me to talk to me, I’m sure of it!”
Jaime confirmed that King Charles “kept looking towards Sophie” and “as soon as he went towards Sophie, Sophie put her hand up.”
She admitted she broke protocol and raised her hand “five times” with Jaime reminding her, “You’re meant to wait until he puts his hand up.”
Sophie explained the reasoning behind her rule break, saying: “I thought I was missing my opportunity and I didn’t listen to that, because they were just talking and it was noise in my ear. So I thought is this my moment? Am I meant to shake and curtsey? I was buckling.”
