He went on several dates on the Netflix show, which involved him rejecting multiple women such as the iconic Sonia, but decided to introduce a woman called Shelley during the season three finale episode, during his birthday barbecue.

James and Shelley are a successful Love on the Spectrum couple, the latter of which was introduced in season three’s finale. He was very open about his future without pets and kids, and his appeal for physical attraction, just like co-star Connor, who didn’t want to date a blonde girl. James later met Shelley, and has been with her for over a year.
He openly said he wants a girlfriend with who he “doesn’t feel a desire to avert his gaze.” Now he’s met Shelley, they’ve been happier than ever, and he’s even said in the past that his girlfriend would have to like his hair, because it would be “highly unlikely” that he’d stick with anyone who told him to cut his hair, even if they’re an “ideal match”.

A wild theory speculates that James and Shelley are a successful LOTS couple because she’s a “conventionally attractive woman”. A Reddit user wrote, “i’m not saying the other dates weren’t attractive or that they don’t share similarities past the fact she’s attractive i just feel like with the last dates they didn’t go far because he didn’t find them that attractive simply.”
Another agreeing person wrote: “100% James was looking for a conventionally attractive woman.” However, there’s a divide, with many people stating James and Shelley clearly have shared interests, like he did with Emma, while he lacked common hobbies with Sonia. Plus, James went on some of these dates after he’d started seeing Shelley, which she’d initially been upset about but they’ve worked through.
James and Shelley have been together for over a year now, and have a lot of shared interests, such as do karaoke, ComicCon, and even like the same bands! So while this theory is simply based on an idea, James was open about not wanting pets or children in his future, and Shelley appeared to agree on that front.
