For anyone watching Love on the Spectrum, it may just seem like an entertaining Netflix show. But, there’s much more to it. Love on the Spectrum creator Cian O’Clery spent years in the TV world before creating the series. There was one key moment in which the director knew he simply had to make the show. Love on the Spectrum creator has had quite the career
Watching Love on the Spectrum season three, and it’s clear to see the stars of the show have a great connection and relationship with creator Cian O’Clery.
During confessionals, the participants often speak to Cian, and he’s publicly spoken about sharing the cast’s real-life stories with the world in the most authentic way possible.
Prior to Love on the Spectrum, Cian worked on various other reality TV shows.
He was a producer on Wife Swap Australia, as well as a story producer on the Australian versions of The Mole and Farmer Wants a Wife, per In Touch Weekly.
Cian also directed episodes of the National Geographic Channel’s Life on the Edge.
Key moment sparked Love on the Spectrum creation
Love on the Spectrum is a Netflix series that people have come to adore. And, it turns out creator Cian had a ball making the show.
Speaking to Tudum last year, Cian explained how Love on the Spectrum came to be.
He said: “I made a couple of series in Australia with Love on the Spectrum co-executive producer Karina Holden that were about people with disabilities looking for work…”
Cian added: “During that process, we met lots and lots of people on the spectrum. Not only did we get to know the people we were filming really well, but we also spoke to hundreds and hundreds of people on the spectrum about their lives and what was important to them. The story of people wanting to find love and wanting to date just kept coming up. To us, that was something that wasn’t right. There was obviously a lack of support, and it just felt like a really interesting area to shine a light on.”
There was one main aspect that Cian and his team wanted to highlight via the show: “The other thing that we noticed was the diversity of the spectrum and just how different people can be. That’s the most important thing that we can do with this series, to show that huge diversity that people don’t really understand. I should note, as well, it’s really important to acknowledge that not everybody who is on the spectrum needs support in the world of dating and relationships. Everyone’s so different. But a lot of people do, and a lot of people we spoke to did and were really calling out for that.”
