Love on the Spectrum creator finally responds to the moment Brandon had to leave his date
People are 'so glad' that part of filming was left in
Brandon Lemieux went on a date with Madison on Love on the Spectrum, but it ended with him having to leave the restaurant. He was so nervous that he ducked down close to the table, before Madison told him she doesn’t think they’re a romantic match. Alas, she found romance with Tyler later on – but now, the show’s creator has spoken out on what happened.
Brandon had to leave his date with Madison
During a date with Madison, Brandon felt he had to leave because he was getting overwhelmed with the amount of auditory triggers in the restaurant. He felt overstimulated and had to step outside, which has led to some controversy with viewers on why they brought him into a situation which he may be triggered by during their date.
Love on the Spectrum creator Cian O’Clery told Vanity Fair on April 26, “When you watch that scene, for people who haven’t experienced something like that, I think you get it a lot more than if someone says, “Oh, I don’t like it when I hear a baby crying.” It felt important for us to keep that in and not to try and remove it because it felt hard on him.”
Despite the fact he had to leave momentarily before their date was moved to a quieter area, Brandon told Madison he believes they’re a romantic match, and that he enjoyed himself. Sadly, Madison didn’t agree, and bravely had to let him down gently. She later went on to meet her now-boyfriend, Tyler, who she couldn’t stop kissing!
Love on the Spectrum creator responds to Brandon leaving the restaurant
Cian O’Clery, the creator of Love on the Spectrum, revealed that they “obviously had spoken to Brandon beforehand.” He told Vanity Fair, “We’d spoken to him and his mom many times—talked to them about being part of the series, talked about what kind of date would be okay. We checked: Would he be okay going on a date in a restaurant if it was fairly quiet? “Yeah, absolutely.””
He added, “We had a whole half of that massive restaurant that was pretty much empty for us. There just happened to be some screaming children on the other end. We didn’t know that he was going to be as sensitive as he was. At the time, I was feeling bad for him, and we were trying to work out what we could do to make his experience less stressful. And eventually we did.”
“Luckily, he was happy to step away and find a different spot. We thought about that scene for a while, and we spoke to [Brandon and his mother] about it too. We thought it was really important to include because people talk a lot about sensitivities or anxiety, but it’s rare that you see it and you can actually feel it as an audience member,” Cian added.
Cian also said how Brandon was “so proud of himself for putting himself out there and doing that,” and his mother felt the same. “He struggles with that on a daily basis whenever he goes out. Hopefully some places will start to understand a bit more about sounds and noises, because for people who are sensitive to noise, it can be rough,” said Cian.
