Love on the Spectrum parents called out for sharing posts defending RFK’s autism remarks
The US health secretary is on a mission to determine the cause of autism
The Love on the Spectrum cast have always been very open about their views, and RFK’s recent comments caused a stir in the autism community. Robert F. Kennedy, the US Health Secretary, has proposed cuts to disability services and plans more expansive monitoring of autistic people’s health records, and the announcement led to a huge clapback from some of the LOTS cast.
Some Love on the Spectrum parents are being called out
Abbey, Connor and Tanner’s mothers are being called out for resharing posts that defend RFK’s comments about autism. Abbey’s mum reposted a video to her 1.3 million TikTok followers, in which the video creator said RFK spoke the “real truth for parents of autistic people.” The creator said, “He’s taking parents words and he put them in his speech. Some of us are going through that every day and our voices aren’t heard.”
RFK revealed in his speech that autism “ruins families,” adding that they cannot hold jobs or find love. A mother with an autistic child told her followers in a video reshared by Abbey: “If he’s crying, I have to guess what’s hurting him. His body is so overstimulated that he stims the majority of the day, has spit stims so that’s fun to deal with in public, we have to figure out which birthday parties we’ll go to.”
Abbey’s mom, Christine, recently spoke out on her involvement with Autism Speaks, a non-profit autism organization which conducts awareness into the disorder. She said, “For us, Autism speaks was a resource to find appropriate interventions, Ask questions and get some guidance. For others they feel that Autism speaks is trying to “cure” autistic people.”
She added, “Because that population has different needs than the more higher support needs people -it’s truly a shame the in-fighting going on, but that’s when you get when you have so many different types of affect for this thing we call autism and one basic term (spectrum) to describe so many different people with vastly different struggles.”
Reality Shrine has contacted Abbey, Connor and Tanner’s mothers for comment.
On the other hand, the OG cast are not happy with RFK
James, Dani and Shelley have all been really vocal about their thoughts on RFK’s remarks. His comments about autism were described as “flagrantly false” by James in a People interview, saying he was “not particularly pleased” with them. He said, “They clearly were made from a position of extreme ignorance. Autism manifests itself differently in every person. No two people who have it are exactly the same.”
Dani agreed and told NewsNation: “Autistic people have the same hopes, dreams, and yes, the same awkward dating moments as anyone else. To generalize and say none of us can work, date, or contribute to society is completely false. I have a job. I do pay taxes. I’ve dated. I have a master’s degree.” Many of the cast are saying RFK’s claims that most cases of autism are “severe” are not true.
