In August and September of 2021, when the show came to an end after eight seasons, Andre posted a picture of Captain Raymond Holt, which he captioned: “Love always, Daptain. #Brooklyn99.”
In another post, he shared a photo of himself and Andy Samberg, who played Detective Jake Peralta, where he wrote: “Unleash your best insult tirade in the comments, but um… let’s keep it PG.”
As the final season was about to air, Andre shared a first look in which he told fans: “I give you permission to shed a tear.”
The Chicago-born actor was also known for his work on Homicide: Life on the Street, where he played the role of Detective Frank Pembleton from 1993 to 1998.
He was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards during his career, and won two. His first came in 1998 for his performance in the drama series Homicide.
Tributes come pouring in for the star
Andre’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star, Terry Crews, leads the tributes, as he said he was “honored” to have known the father of three.
“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” he wrote.
“This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you.”
Ryan Case, the director of the NBC sitcom took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share some funny memories with her friend.
Starting the thread, she wrote: “I can’t stop crying. I have so many wonderful things to say about this amazing man who was so immensely talented and kind to me. So many of my favorite moments editing and directing were because of him.
“Gone way way way too soon. My heart aches for his family and friends.”
In another tweet, she said: “If there weren’t men like Andre in this business I probably would’ve quit it a long time ago. The world is worse without him.”
