Here’s what TV show your Cardiff Uni accommodation would feature in

With Freshers’ week in full swing, it will not be long before the streets of Cardiff are once again filled with wide-eyed youngsters prepped for a year of mayhem and chaos. To get everyone back in the Cardiff spirit, let’s take a close look at the Cardiff University accommodations dotted around the city and place them within the worlds of everyone’s favourite pastime: TV shows!

Whether you are entering your first year or rolling back into town for the final time, we’ve compiled this list, ranging from The Inbetweeners to Gossip Girl, just to remind everyone what the beloved Cardiff Uni accoms have in store for us in 26/27.

1. Talybont South – Game of Thrones

For one of the most infamous accommodations in the city, we thought it was only right to pair it with one of the most popular shows in the world of TV: Game of Thrones.

Just like in the Game of Thrones universe, residents of Talybont South thrive off the debauchery and raucousness that persists within this accommodation complex.

During the first few months in Taly South, when the kitchen is like a foreign land to most students, the medieval-style creations of your flatmates will look like they have been plucked straight from an official Game of Thrones cookbook. With the lack of a sofa in every flat too, the middle-ages connotations are not just reserved for the gruel that appears on your hob every evening.

2. Talybont North – Off Campus

There is one key similarity between Talybont North and Off Campus that made it a no-brainer when curating this list. That similarity, of course, is sports.

Amazon’s Off Campus was released in May of this year, and the college-set drama revolves around main character, Hannah, and her love interest, Garrett, who features in the university hockey team.

With Talybont North’s proximity to Cardiff University’s sports complex in Taly, it is not hard to picture the events of Off Campus occurring within the accom, well, just with a Welsh twang and Taly North’s unmistakable grime attached to it.

3. Senghennydd Court – Breaking Bad

Following just behind Talybont in terms of the most popular Cardiff Uni accoms is Senghennydd Court. Therefore, it has to be paired with another classic TV series, and what better choice is there than Breaking Bad.

As people who have experienced both will say, getting through the beginning periods will be a drag, and you may wish you had selected Talybont, or Game of Thrones instead, but by the end the memories of both will last forever.

More importantly than any other reason, however, is the visual appeal of Senghennydd Court. The distinct, yellow-stained walls of the accommodation stand out as you walk by the buildings on your way into the town centre, and they would not look one inch out of place if you were to find them in the arid desert of Albuquerque, New Mexico: the home of Breaking Bad.

4. Senghennydd Hall – Better Call Saul

Cardiff Uni accommodation’s very own spinoff.

Senghennydd Hall is merely a stone’s throw from Court, so it only made sense to choose Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad’s acclaimed spinoff show, for this comparison.

Perhaps in both cases, the better-looking younger sibling of Court and Breaking Bad (in terms of visual care and cinematography, respectively), Senghennydd Hall and Better Call Saul have found success irrespective of their source material and stand as good choices for students and TV fans alike.

5. Talybont Gate – Gossip Girl

Manhattan. The part of New York City home to world-famous landmarks such as Central Park and Times Square where the average house price is $1.4 million. Talybont Gate. Home to the IMG 7-a-side football league and situated just in front of a 24-hour McDonald’s.

Try to spot the difference, because I certainly can’t!

On a serious note, Talybont Gate is known for being the poshest of the Cardiff Uni accommodations, so what better than to compare it to the spoilt and opulent Manhattan world of Gossip Girl.

Gate’s visual appeal stands alone in comparison to its Taly counterparts, meaning it is often home to mature and foreign students who can afford to spend an extra penny on their first year living arrangements. Perhaps you may even find your own versions of Serena or Blair in your flat if you happen to end up staying in Talybont Gate for the upcoming year.

6. University Hall – Sex Education

For anyone familiar with Netflix’s Sex Education, University Hall can only be described as the Moordale toilets where Otis begins his therapy hustle. Overgrown, dingy and tired.

Equally, for any new residents of Uni Halls, be prepared to become closely acquainted with another prominent feature of Sex Education: Cycling. University Hall is, by no means of exaggeration, miles from Cardiff City Centre and making the hour-long, post-YOLO walk is not for the faint of heart, especially in those winter months.

University Hall (somehow) and the Mountainside Military School seen in season two of the show, also both used to be large, lavish mansions in Wales, so that’s another similarity to add to the list.

7. Talybont Court – The Inbetweeners

The final entry on this list, and the last of the four Talybonts to discuss, is Talybont Court. Ending on a staple of Cardiff Uni accommodations, it is only right to pair it with a British TV classic too: The Inbetweeners.

Aside from the title, with Court situated in-between the town centre and the rest of Talybont, the smaller rooms and eclectic mix of flatmates you’ll encounter could mean you find your very own Jay, Simon, Neil and Will in your Talybont Court flat this upcoming year.

When leaving the Talybont Court gates, they are also very reminiscent of those featured out the front of The Inbetweeners’ Rudge Park Comprehensive, adding another layer to the connection. Just make sure you don’t forget your swipe card on your way out!
