Rotten Tomatoes alternative scoring movies on ‘woke’ themes divides people after going viral

There’s this new website called Is It Woke or Not, and as the name suggests, it tells you how socially conscious a TV show or film is. 

Like it or not, politics plays a part in all TV and film, from the actors who are cast to the themes included. Nowadays, people decide on watching media based not only on the reviews, but also on their morals and ethics. Case in point: Films like Citizen Vigilante.

What is Is It Woke or Not? 

Over the last few days, Is It Woke or Not has blown up on Twitter, and the developer even posted a graph that showed massive spikes in traffic over the course of just 24 hours. 

As the name plainly points out, the site is designed to show you just how “woke” a film or TV show is, even though the term isn’t really trackable. It’s mostly based on personal opinion (and AI), rather than facts or figures. The site is incredibly easy to use; you simply type in the name of the TV show or film to see the “woke rating”. Just don’t take the results as gospel. 

For instance, on one end at 96 per cent you’ve got the gay Netflix show Heartstopper, but on the other end with 28 per cent is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The higher the percentage, the more “woke”. You can even dive into specific celebrities, but it’s still a work in progress. 

As for what makes a project “woke”, according to the site, factors the AI considers include: 

• “Woke” representation or casting
• Political dialogue
• Identity-driven story themes
• Creator track record context
• Backlash and complaints
• Canon changes
• Cultural critique

It’s proving quite controversial on Twitter 

Though the site is being used by just about everyone, it was initially designed by a right-wing person who is against “woke” content. That’s why the website ranks “woke” titles as the “worst” options, and the more mainstream titles as the options to watch. 

“Avoid the woke stuff,” a message reads on the homepage. 

But here’s the thing: Upon releasing Is It Woke or Not to the internet, the designer essentially gave up control. Everyone, from the left to the right, is using it for their own purposes, rather than to hate on the so-called “woke” films and TV shows.  

“Ranking shows and actors by how woke they are was funny as hell till I realised being woke was considered bad to this site,” one person wrote on Twitter. 

“I just found out that there’s a completely unironic website that measures the ‘wokeness meter’ of movies and this actually has me crying,” another person said.  

It’s mostly made up, but nontheless very interesting/infuriating.
