‘I was supposed to die’: Netflix actor recovering from brain surgery after 100mph car crash
He sustained a whole list of injuries
A Netflix actor is now recovering from extensive brain surgery after being involved in a 100mph car crash which doctors have said he was lucky to survive.
Clayton Conroy, who starred in Netflix’s The Gringo Hunters, which is based on a real Mexican police unit, was struck by the driver in April. He’s since been sharing updates on his recovery.
Clayton sustained a traumatic brain injury, as well as multiple fractures and nerve damage, after being hit by an alleged reckless driver in Los Angeles. He’s now said the ordeal has changed his outlook on life, and made him grateful for every day.
The 32-year-old actor had been out with friends, and on the way home was struck by a car that was allegedly driving at 100mph. “The road was looking as normal as it could, just lights on the road behind me,” Clayton told the Santa Cruz Sentinel. “I did, perhaps, notice certain lights approaching quickly. From there, I woke up in the hospital.”

As per the report, when he awoke, Clayton was told he had suffered a traumatic brain injury, and a fractured hip and shoulder. The actor told the publication how this has now changed his outlook on life, after he was told he was lucky to be alive. He reflected on how the incident has made him “think a lot about what’s important in life.”
“I’m feeling different but, I guess, lucky or happy that it could be much worse,” he said. “[I’m] trying not to take things for granted.” After the crash, the actor initially couldn’t walk without assistance, but now can walk short distances unaided. He still experiences headaches, brain fog and cognitive fatigue.
In an Instagram post, he explained further what happened. “Got hit by a guy going over 100. Had brain surgery. Was supposed to die,” Clayton said. “Spent my birthday in the hospital. Lost 20 pounds. Severed nerves in my arm and fractured bones in my leg. Still can’t walk. But I’ve had time to think about a lot.”

In a further post shared this week, five months after the accident, Clayton said he was “finally feeling good enough to post something.” He added: “It’s been getting better. Every day, and I just wanted to hop on and say that you might have dark times. There might be dark days, dark months, even. But it does get better. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.”
A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with felony reckless driving causing major injuries. “This incident is another reminder that reckless driving is not only dangerous, it can have devastating and life-changing consequences,” CHP Central Los Angeles Captain Martin Geller said in a statement. “Speeding, unsafe manoeuvres, and other reckless behaviour behind the wheel put everyone on the roadway at risk.”
