It’s autumn, so we decided which colleges the Gilmore Girls characters would be assigned to

We know you’re all rewatching it right now x

If you’re anything like me, the moment the leaves start turning brown you’ve already got Gilmore Girls season one booted up on your laptop with a cup of strong coffee. It’s a yearly ritual, that helps us ignore our uni work and focus on the more important things like: how does Kirk have so many jobs while I can’t even get accepted onto a grad scheme?

So join me in the nostalgia while I assign each character a Durham college.

Collingwood – Richard Gilmore

Richard Gilmore might be a grandpa, but in his day, he was a Yale sportsman (so basically a Collingwood student but in the U.S). He lives for college spirit; he goes to every college game despite the fact he graduated decades before. This is the future of the Collingwood student, and they should feel lucky because Richard is one of the sweetest characters in the show.

Grey – Michel

Via YouTube

“Grey by name, grey by nature” doesn’t have to be a bad thing if you’re sporting a top designer suit – in the colour grey, of course. Michel is sleek and put together, but like the Grey student, he loves a party. All the sophistication, and all the sass.

John Snow – Emily Gilmore

This one was a hard one. Emily would definitely be a hill college student, just because she needs the elevated height to look down on people from. She’s all for history though, so she would eat up John Snow’s namesake and heritage.

Hatfield – Logan

Via YouTube

This is a no-brainer. Privately educated; a shameless beneficiary of nepotism; comes from a well-known family… am I talking about a Hatfield student, or am I talking about Logan Hunsburger?

All the privilege and blondeness aside though, Logan was probably Rory’s best romantic interest (apart from the love connection with Paris that was criminally never written into the show). So, we hate Logan, but we also want to marry Logan.

Josephine Butler – Sookie

The JoBo student is Sookie St. James in an alternate universe where she’s actually a STEM student and not a chef. But she’s definitely that one person in self-catered uni halls that always has a better meal than you. So, she’ll make you jealous, then she’ll leave the kitchen in such a state that it starts a full-on fight in the flat’s group chat.

You can even the scales by stealing her food later though.

South – Lorelai

The South student is a trailblazer in a uni full of old colleges and traditions that make no sense (looking at you, Hatfield, stop the spoon-banging, it’s weird). The South student has taken a step into the unknown, just like Lorelai – except the South student wouldn’t be trusted to take care of a child.

St Aidan’s – Chris

Via YouTube

The main thing that St Aidan’s college is known for is its stairs. It’s such a long journey to reach the college – but is it really worth the hassle? This is exactly the feeling viewers get while watching Rory’s and Lorelai’s relationship with Chris. All the build-up, none of the pay-off. But he tries at least, he’s got good intentions.

Maybe an education at Durham and getting to see the pretty views of the cathedral from Aidan’s hill would give him some needed character development.

St Chad’s – Rory

Via YouTube

The St Chad’s student is a special one. They’re a diamond in the rough. A rare sighting. They’re probably the favourite child in their family, and they can never have casual relationships because people just keep falling in love with them. So the Chad’s student is Rory (before she goes to Yale and ruins her character).

St Cuth’s – Dean

So Cuth’s is almost two colleges really – the bailey, and Parson’s Field. Both are great, but are very different vibes, just like Dean between the early seasons and the later seasons. One minute he’s a bookish, cultured 2000s heartthrob, the next he’s a possessive (kind of legitimately though), irritable mess. Not saying there’s a good and bad venue for Cuth’s, just saying there’s very much two sides…

Hild Bede – Luke

Via YouTube

Hild Bede doesn’t associate with the bailey, but it also doesn’t associate with the hill. It put itself away from everything, it’s a lone wolf. Luke doesn’t like most people (apart from Lorelai) and he doesn’t like phone signal. So Luke would be a big fan of Hild Bede being too far into the wildness to accept calls.

We love Luke though.

St John’s – Mrs Kim

Not much to say here, Mrs Kim is the perfect fit for John’s. It’s known for putting a strong emphasis on religion – check. It’s serene and traditional – check. Its bar has ceilings so low that only Mrs Kim herself would be able to walk through – check. If John’s students were less fun-loving and cool, Mrs Kim would probably enrol.

St Mary’s – Tristan

Tristan would thrive in Mary’s. He loves the studious, bookish, Marys of the world (because who doesn’t). So St Mary’s would be on the top of his allocations list (fighting it out against Hatfield probably).

Stephenson – Kirk

Via YouTube

Such an unassuming college. I think I’ve visited Stevo bar maybe once in my first year. But nonetheless, I find Stevo students everywhere in the wilds of Durham. Like Kirk, you don’t know where they live, where they come from. They’ve got so much mystery but in such an unserious way.

Trevelyan – Lane

The Trevs people are artsy. Ordinary castles are so boring, so they live in a hexagonal ‘modern castle’. They are just too cool, just like Lane. Plus, the Trevs music and arts scene is so strong, making it a no-brainer choice for rockstar drummer Lane Kim.

I’m also still disappointed by how her story ended in the show, so I’m going to imagine her arc ends with her enrolling in Trevs at Durham instead so I can feel better.

University – Paris

The biggest mystery of Gilmore Girls is how Rory could get accepted to Harvard while Paris got rejected. The real-world reason is actually that the show couldn’t get permission to film in Harvard – so Paris was robbed and I’m still upset about it. But I think a close runner-up choice would be castle for Paris. She strives for the best, and castle is probably the most famous Durham college. And it has that ivy league traditional vibe to it too, which Paris totally deserves.

Ustinov – Asher Fleming

This one might offend some Ustinov students (sorry not sorry). But in a Durham student body that is mostly undergraduate, the Ustinov postgrads are the oldies. Every time I see a postgrad dating a fresher, my mind instantly goes to the romance between Paris and Professor Fleming.

Van Mildert – Jess

Via YouTube

If you’ve seen the episode where Luke pushes Jess into the lake, you knew this was coming. Jess is just drawn to the water, so Van Mildert – to his dismay – would definitely be his allocation. He’d have to get over his fear of water birds though. The ducks at Mildert are probably less violent than the swans in Star’s Hollow.
