I’m Carl Cashman: The sexy Scouse politician the U.S. far right are calling a ‘Conservative Chad’
‘I’m far from that – I’m a liberal lefty… Their worst nightmare’
I don’t believe in love at first sight, but in my days living in Liverpool when I first came across Carl Cashman it came pretty damn close. I could simply not believe this man, amongst the sexiest I’ve ever seen in my entire life, was just a politician for the Lib Dems running for mayor of the city. Carl Cashman first came across me, for my sins, because I’d posted on Twitter saying how fit I found him. I’m cringing writing that, but I was about 19 and a decade on I can own my thirst. We have followed each other on social media for many years and whilst, obviously, I fancied him – it was his commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and showing up for queer people that I always admired hugely. Carl Cashman is a politician who, for obvious reasons, gets hounded for his looks by gay men – and yet despite the fact his inbox is probably swamped with the type of content I could never type here, as a straight man he never stops being the exemplary ally. Carl Cashman is far from a Conservative.

Carl Cashman has been subject to sporadic viral tweets about how hot he is through his time in the public eye. But this week, he has had to endure more than most as pictures of him went viral across numerous tweets. The Americans have found him, and the American far right are currently having tweets of him with millions of views describing him as “a Conservative Chad”. Truly the worst accounts on the internet – ones openly saying the n word amongst other insidious content – have latched on. I spoke to Carl Cashman about what this week has been like for him and what he has to say to those who’d brand a man who wore a “Protect Scouse Dolls” t-shirt to Pride as “a Conservative Chad.”
‘You’re sick if you find him attractive’
In the most baiting tweet known to man, an American account posted “you’re sick if you find him attractive”. This spawned so many replies and quotes that went as viral as the original tweet – now clocking in at 3.4 million views.
It also spawned more insidious tweets as those Americans on the far right clocked who Carl Cashman was and started posting about him and calling him “a Conservative Chad.”
One post from an account with some of the most despicable tweets I’ve ever seen has now got over a million views and says “European leftists are setting aside their partisan blinders for the normie conservative Chad. Why? Because he’s hot. Don’t tell me they wouldn’t do the same for a fascist twink, who can properly fill in a pair of grey sweatpants.”
Err, okay.
I spoke to Carl Cashman about a very weird week for him
Me and Carl Cashman have always been on nice terms, so it’s surreal seeing him go viral with people who have no clue who he is and what he stands for. As the left have got increasingly less passionate about the rights for LGBTQ+ people, Carl repping the Lib Dems has remained on the front line for L, G, B AND the T. It’s amazing to see, and he always puts himself out there for us.
I asked Carl what he had to say about these tweets, and Cashman told me: “It’s quite surreal to see yourself in news articles in LGBTQ+ magazines around the world. If it strengthens the liberal cause, and puts the lens on my city and its incredibly good looking population, then I’ll take that.
“As for calling me a normie Conservative Chad, I couldn’t be further from that. I’m what he would call a lefty liberal, his worst nightmare!”

He takes it all in his stride. When I praised his constant, steadfast support for our community, Carl Cashman told me “I think it’s more important than ever to really stand up for our friends in the LGBTQ+ community. I know that many of my friends feel under attack and I’m glad that I can support them in any way possible. We’re all different and that should be the best thing about life.
“Facists and homophobes are threatened by that amazing difference and want everyone to conform to what they expect. I love that the community is fighting back against that and I’m happy to play whatever part I can in doing that. Ultimately I want to be on the right side of history and show compassion for my fellow human being.”
Many straight men could take a leaf out of the Carl Cashman book on how to be a great ally – standing up for us when the American far right are trying to call him a Conservative Chad and beyond.
