The sad reason Amy Bradley has been legally declared dead, despite theories she’s alive

The Netflix creators are hoping this can be reversed

The Amy Bradley case has baffled everyone involved. And now everyone who was watched the new three-part documentary series on Netflix. The documentary reexamines the unsolved case, and presents loads of theories about what might have happened. But, despite many of the theories claiming Amy Bradley is still alive, she has been legally declared dead.

A lot of things were missed out of the Netflix documentary, and one of the most key things was that Amy Bradley was declared legally dead in March 2010. This is despite no conclusion being made about what might have happened to her. But, she remains on the FBI’s most wanted missing persons list.

So, why was Amy Bradley declared dead?

It’s actually a very sad reason Amy Bradley was declared dead. The Social Security Administration (SSA) of America will declare someone dead when they have been missing from home and have not been heard from for seven years. Some states have different rules, but Virginia, where Amy is from, goes by the seven year rule. Amy has now been missing for 27 years, and the last recorded possible sighting of her was in 2005.

According to the SSA handbook: “We presume a person is dead if [the person] has been missing from home and has not been heard from for seven years or more. This presumption applies regardless of the reason for the absence. Once the presumption applies, it can only be disputed if we: Prove the person is alive; or provide an explanation that explains the individual’s absence and continued life.”

The ruling can be reversed if evidence to prove the person is alive is found. And the creators of the Netflix documentary has said they think Amy Bradley is still alive. They hope the series will help find new information, and may bring Amy home.

The show’s creators said the photos of a woman who might be Amy found on an adult website are the most interesting theory there is. In an interview, the creators called the pictures are “very convincing” and said they “blew us away”.
