People are lowkey mad about the great potato debate that’s taking over TikTok right now

Someone had the audacity to vote crinkle cut chips as the worst

As we all know, Brits love a debate and luckily, so does TikTok. Whether it’s about the North/South divide or which sauce goes best with chips, there has been many a discourse about what’s wrong and what’s right.

And in the UK, a common theme of argument seems to be food related, god knows why. So as we’ve reached a new height of boredom, the people of TikTok have now moved to debating the best form of the potato itself, rather than it’s accoutrements.

What is the potato debate on TikTok?

The TikTok potato debate was born after people started bragging about their fave version of the vegetable. And whilst #potatotok is apparently the place to go to find incredible potato recipes, it recently became the breeding ground for this debate. One user, Hattie, caused mayhem when she asked people to guess the worst kind of potato, asking commenters to “give [her their] worst.”

Hattie said: “I need to say something the internet may give me a lot of hate for. Potatoes are obviously delicious, every variant, oh my god. 10 out of 10. Apart from one – they’re just not nice. Whatever the seasoning, whatever flavour it is, I don’t like it.” And then she said it was potato wedges.

People then some wild claims out there in their comments as they’ve both tried to defend their favourite form of potato and slam their least favourite and honestly, things got messy.

Despite the wild claim, loads of people actually agreed with Hattie, with one even writing: “They are definitely the worst potato variety, that’s for sure.”

Some TikTokers have decided to remain neutral on the situation, claiming all forms of potato are good, like the self-titled “Potato Queen”, Poppy O’Toole. Poppy decided to instead celebrate the starchy delights, by creating a series of the top 20 ways to make potatoes.

It seems that wedges are the bottom of the barrel for this TikToker who claimed they taste “earthy”. One commenter helpfully replied with their own recipe and method for banging wedges, before adding: “You can’t be making them right!”

It seems that these potatoes aren’t the only things getting heated, because under every TikTok like this there are loads of people expressing their opinions, whether it’s their potato preference, or whether they agree with the crowned spud or not.

Other candidates for worst potato include a “boiled new potato with the skin on” or “mash unless it’s covered in gravy.” Other extreme opinions dared to claim “Crinkle cut chips are worse than wedges, there I said it”.

Look, the clear choice for best potato is obviously a roast potato, crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, it’s all you could want, yet people disagree and claim that a chip has all those attributes and has the added benefit of being hand-held. Even the chip-voters weren’t safe, because some people want to skip over the crispy potato, and go straight for the soft, creamy and cheesy mash.
