Influencer getting dragged for taking a video of herself as the ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge

A Mexican Navy training vessel collided with New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge on May 17, 2025, leaving two crew members dead and at least 19 others injured. The ship, Cuauhtémoc, had just departed from Pier 17 in Lower Manhattan and was en route to Iceland as part of a goodwill tour when the accident occurred. The Cuauhtémoc was performing a ceremonial manoeuvre known as “manning the yards,” in which sailors stand atop the masts in full uniform to salute the host city. During the manoeuvre, the ship’s tall masts struck the underside of the bridge, causing catastrophic damage to the rigging and resulting in crew members falling from height. Two people lost their life, and now an influencer is getting dragged online after a video of her filming herself as the ship hit the Brooklyn Bridge goes viral.

The video has gone mega viral and shows a content creator / influencer getting footage of herself as the ship crashes into the Brooklyn Bridge, smiling and laughing without any knowledge of the tragedy behind her. Two people died, and over 22 got injured in the collision with three reportedly in a critical condition.

The video is getting dragged online, with the “imagine having zero self awareness” tweet really blowing up on Twitter. The replies are savage too. One reply said the girl has “the survival instincts of a goldfish”. Ruthless. People are also pointing out how the video shows the girl pointing at the ship as it crashes – obviously her glee is hugely at odds with what’s happening.

To cut her some slack, I’d assume she was just so locked into getting the footage she likely had no clue what was happening behind her. But that hasn’t stopped the video really going crazy online and it’s just like one of those moments where the social media content desperate generation has those less plugged into their phones in disbelief.

An investigation into what caused the ship to crash is still ongoing.
