Barnies vs Bernies: Watch the two versions of Black Mirror’s Bête Noire Netflix is showing
You’re not going mad
Black Mirror has broken the internet after showing two versions of Bête Noire, and you need to watch both of them side-by-side.
The episode is about a woman called Maria whose life is turned upside down when a girl she knew at school joins her work and starts using a magic pendant to change reality.
At one point, Maria is convinced that a KFC-style chicken chain used to be called Bernies but when she Googles it, she finds her colleagues were right and it was always Barnies.
She then goes home and gets out her boyfriend’s hat to double-check what the logo says, because he used to work at the fast-food chain.
Verity is altering reality to make it seem like something else was true, and Netflix has scarily been doing the same with viewers.
Some people are being shown a different version of the episode, where Maria thought it was called Barnies, but the chain was actually called Bernies.
Two scenes were filmed and Netflix is randomly distributing them to users. Once your version has been picked, you can’t see the other one, even if you log in on another device.
Here are the two versions side-by-side, just to prove that there really are two:
@thalialeblanc Video proof that both versions exist! And I have a theory of them using Ai dubbing for the 2nd version 👀👀 @Netflix #blackmirror #betenoire #netflix #mandelaeffect #ai #blackmirrorseason7
In the first one, Maria says: “It was Barnies. Barnies Chicken, the chicken chain it was Barnie’s. Barnie’s with an ‘a’ not Bernies with an ‘e’.
She then claims it’s Barnies because chickens live in a barn, and Nick corrects her by saying they actually live in a coop.
In the other Black Mirror version, she says: “It was Bernies. Bernies Chicken, the chicken chain it was Bernies with an ‘e’, not Barnie’s with an ‘a’.

Maria’s reasoning for this one is that Barnies is always spelled with an “ey” like “Barneys,” so it has to be “Bernies” as it’s an “ie”.
The part where she goes home and looks at her boyfriend’s hat is in both versions, and one of them says “Barnies” in big red letters while the other says “Bernies”.

Netflix still hasn’t revealed what the hell is going on, but they’re obviously trying to play into the theme of altering reality.
The universe is literally being changed for viewers in real life, making the episode even more clever.
