Here’s what’ll happen in HBO’s The Last of Us season two if it follows the game’s plot

HBO’s The Last of Us is back on 13th April, two years after Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay burst onto our screens as Joel and Ellie.

The Last of Us, which is based on a video game of the same name, follows Joel as he transports teenager Ellie through a post-apocalyptic world plagued by a virus which turns its hosts into zombie-like creatures.

Fans of the game will know that the first season pretty closely followed the plot of the game. All major parts of the game were portrayed in the series, and a lot of lines are actually said verbatim in the show.

You may also remember that the actress who voiced Ellie in the games, Ashley Johnson, features in the show as Ellie’s mother who we meet in the final episode of season one.

So, as season two is soon to be upon us, many have been asking whether we can expect it to be as faithful to the game as the first instalment was.

First things first, if The Last of Us follows the game closely, you’ll probably end up pretty heart broken. Can’t say I didn’t warn you.

But, what will actually happen? Let’s see.

We’ll be fast forwarding four years

In the game, we start part two, four years after we left Joel and Ellie. Part one effectively ended with Joel saving Ellie, who it turned out was going to be used to create a cure to the Cordyceps disease plaguing the world.

However, in order for the procedure to work, Ellie would have to die, therefore Joel saves her, and they go on the run.

Four years on, we find that Ellie and Joel have formed a somewhat strained life in Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel’s brother Tommy lives.

Joel and his brother are ambushed

During one of their regular patrols, Tommy and Joel rescue a girl called Abby from an infected horde of people.

They return Abby to her friends and family, only to be turned on by them as it’s revealed Joel killed Abby’s dad, who we met in season one.

Abby’s dad turns out to be the surgeon who tried to kill Ellie to get the cure for Cordyceps.

I’m sorry, but Joel dies

I warned you that you’d be upset. Hands down, this will be the most heart wrenching part of The Last of Us season two, if it follows the game.

Obviously, we’re just all hoping they switch out this part but honestly, if they do, the rest of the game’s plot just won’t make sense.

Anyway, during the aforementioned ambush, Abby beats Joel to death. Ellie and Tommy witness this and their lives are spared, but frankly, they’re pretty salty about it.

Tommy, Ellie, and her girlfriend head out to enact revenge on Joel’s killer

So, Tommy sets out to Seattle as this is where Abby’s group is known to be based. He is then followed by Ellie, and her girlfriend, Dina.

Ellie tells Dina during this journey that she is immune, and Dina reveals that she is pregnant.

Ellie then finds Abby’s best friend, Nora, who she tortures for information on Abby. The next day, she kills two members of Abby’s group.

The group is then ambushed by Abby, who kills Jesse and takes Tommy hostage.

After this section, we follow Abby’s journey for a while before she she finds out where Ellie hiding out. In a rage, Abby shoots Tommy then severely beats Ellie and Dina, before telling them to leave Seattle.

The game then moves forward a few months, to after Dina gives birth. Her and Ellie are living on a farm, raising the baby, when Tommy arrives with news of Abby’s whereabouts.

Abby is in California, but is soon captured and left to die by a group called the Rattlers. However, Ellie goes to California and saves Abby, allowing her to escape in a real showing of mercy.

Ellie ends up alone

Not exactly the cheery ending you were hoping for.

If the show follows the game, we can expect The Last of Us season two to finish with Ellie returning to the farm to realise Dina and the baby are gone.

So, there you have it, if the game’s plot has anything to do with it, Joel dies, and Ellie is left to deal with horrendous post-traumatic stress whilst navigating her own life and enacting revenge for the death of her father figure.
