Tony from MAFS Australia is a local hero in his hometown for saving two people’s lives

He put his own life at risk to rescue them

Tony Mojanovski and Morena Farina are the oldest couple on MAFS Australia this year, and the groom is a local hero in his hometown of Wollongong.

The 53-year-old runs his own fishing charter business out of Shellharbour Marina called MOJO Fishing Adventures which provides people with affordable adventures.

He was out walking his dog along the coast one day when he spotted some people drowning, and he didn’t hesitate to go and save them.

In April 2022, three people were swept out to sea when a big wave hit them while fishing near Port Kembla on the New South Wales coast.

A 17-year-old, 19-year-old and 50-year-old, were all taken out by the waves, ABC reported at the time.

Tony jumped in alongside others at the scene to try and save them, and they managed to pull the 17-year-old and 50-year-old to shore.

The pair only suffered minor injuries, but the 19-year-old’s body was sadly recovered days later.

Tony filmed a video after the rescue operation and shared it with Illawarra Mercury. You can see he’s covered in cuts, with huge gashes on his face and legs.

“This is why you don’t fish here on bad days. Someone’s now being looked for by helicopters. Very very sad,” the 53-year-old warned.

“Me and teddy bear [his dog] just tried to save somebody just then.”

“The sea conditions have been heavy and this wasn’t the only incident yesterday — there was another one at Killalea, which is a few kilometres down,” NSW Police Superintendent Craig Ireland said.

“I would have to say that conditions were a little bit on the treacherous side, but it doesn’t matter — the conditions seem calm, but a freak wave can happen at any time.”

The officer praised Tony and the other heroic bystanders, but urged everyone to remember how dangerous it can be to go and save somebody.

“That is heroic by all means, but you really have to consider if you are putting yourself at risk or jeopardy when you do that sort of thing,” he said.

“We don’t want to see more people become victims.”
