This Girl Can run floods Exeter streets with pink positivity

On Thursday 27th February, the streets of Exeter were flooded by the Sunset Strides running group who were covered in pink in support of the This Girl Can campaign. A campaign that aims to empower all women to get more active and out there.

This five kilometre run took place with the Sunset Strides club, an all-girl running group that meets Wednesdays and Sundays to complete short, grouped runs along the Quay before meeting back at the Sunset Society Cafe for a coffee and a chat.

A spokesperson from Sunset Strides told The Exeter Tab: “We decided we wanted to do a run in support of This Girl Can month because as a run club for girls that encourages any girl (whether they’ve ran before or not) to come along and support one another. We really felt the campaign supported our ethos and is generally just an amazing movement to support!

“We encouraged everyone to wear pink and over 70 girls came out to support and run the planned 5k route around Exeter City centre. Afterwards, people stayed around to grab their freebies and socialise which was lovely! After the success of the event, many more are in the works.”

Georgia, a first-year student and participant of the Sunset Strides run, commented on the event as being the “embodiment of the club” and was “fun, packed with energy and positively motivating.”

The run was sponsored by some big names: Huel, Redbull, FreeSoul and JNCK Bakery all provided freebies for the participants after an energetic 5k. Of course, these sponsors added to the positive energy and vibes as they were handed to participants. Securing these sponsorships for the event was an achievement for the club’s founders and members.

The turnout for the event was very impressive. On Thursday, this run was conquered by a sea of enthusiastic, young women wearing all pink, high ponytails and carrying high energy as fellow bystanders gave their cheers and support.

Overall, the event showcased resilience, love and togetherness amongst women. The organisers and participants alike should feel nothing but pride for their achievements.
