What we know about Belle Gibson’s boyfriend in Apple Cider Vinegar, Clive Rothwell

In Netflix’s new show Apple Cider Vinegar, Belle Gibson has a boyfriend called Clive. He’s played by the Succession actor Ashley Zukerman. It turns out Clive Rothwell really does exist, and was in a relationship with Belle Gibson for several years. Here’s what we know about him.

Belle Gibson started dating Clive Rothwell in 2012

Belle Gibson was 19 (although she claimed she was 22 at this point). She had a son with her ex-boyfriend Nathan Corbett. Clive Rothwell appears from photos to be older than her, but we don’t know his exact age.

It’s been reported that Clive acted as a stepfather to Belle’s son since he was only a few months old. They all lived together in a beachside apartment which Clive allegedly paid for the majority of the rent for.

As far as we know, Belle Gibson and Clive Rothwell did experience a miscarriage like in Netflix’s Apple Cider Vinegar. She claimed she suffered from this in 2012. Some people did doubt whether this was true, given all of Belle’s other lives about her health. But it seems like this really did happen. An interview with her from 2015 in The Australian Women’s Weekly  reads: “She becomes visibly upset when questioned about this and refuses to discuss it, other than to tearfully deny allegations it was another false health crisis.”

Clive helped Belle out while she was starting The Whole Pantry

He seems to have assisted Belle somewhat with her business ventures. He registered the company names The Whole Pantry and The Whole Life for her.

Apparently Clive was ‘devasted’ by the scandal

Clive has refused to give interviews about his relationship with Belle Gibson and the scam in Apple Cider Vinegar. In 2015, Belle Gibson told The Australian Women’s Weekly he was “supportive but obviously devastated” that people were doubting the truthfulness of Belle Gibson’s cancer story.

Belle then denied knowing much about him in court?!

Despite being in a relationship with him for years, Belle claimed in court she knew very little about him. She said they were “just friends”. When a barrister asked if she knew what Clive’s job was, she replied, “No, that’s not my business.”

Belle Gibson and Clive Rothwell seem to have split up by 2023

The couple were still together in 2019 long after Belle Gibson’s scam was exposed. Clive paid for Belle and her son to go on a month-long holiday to somewhere in Africa.

The Daily Mail reported in 2023 that Clive Rothwell was dating another woman. Apparently he wasn’t living with her anymore, he moved to an apartment on the other side of Melbourne. Sources claimed they hadn’t seen Belle or her son near his new flat.
