Brian Laundrie’s parents blast Netflix in bombshell statement following Gabby Petito doc

The couple had previously kept out of the public eye, but have broken this to slate the doc

The parents of Brian Laundrie have blasted Netflix in a statement following the release of American Murder: Gabby Petito. The couple had previously kept a low profile after their son’s death, but have now spoken out in an interview.

Brian and his fiancée Gabby had been on a road trip together across the US. The trip was planned to last for four months, beginning in July 2021. But, Gabby Petito disappeared in August. Her family reported her as missing in September, after having not heard from her in weeks. Gabby was discovered dead on September 19th. It’s believed Brian Laundrie had strangled her around the date of August 28th.

Following this, Brian Laundrie drove home alone to the house where is parents, Christopher and Roberta, lived. A manhunt for Brian began, and when officers came to the home of his mum and dad, they refused to cooperate. Instead, they pointed police in the direction of their attorney. Brian was later found dead, next to a note that confessed to the murder of Gabby.

Netflix has since released a documentary series, retelling the case. In a statement sent to The US Sun, the Laundries’ attorney, Steven Bertolino, said the family expected the documentary, but called it out for being inaccurate.

He said: “One perspective depicted as the ‘truth’ as seen through their lens. Similar to Republicans and Democrats fighting it out lately. Each side believes their perspective is correct. Hard to see through the lens of the other with all the noise and distrust. To be clear though, there were no contradictions by my clients Chris and Roberta Laundrie.”

The attorney continued: “The documentary contained many inaccuracies, incorrect juxtapositions of timelines, and misstatements and omissions of fact – perhaps deliberate to capture their ‘truth’, perhaps due to simple error. We all know Brian took Gabby’s life and Brian then took his own as well. Let the parents of both Gabby and Brian mourn them in peace.”

The couple are believed to still live in Newport, Florida. In 2024 they were pictured on their driveway, and Brian’s car was still parked there. They have tried to stay as out of the public eye as possible, and didn’t take part in the Netflix doc.

“We did reach out to his family,” creators of the show told US Weekly. “It’s hard to open up about this [topic] for that side of the family. So we made best efforts to reach out to them. We reached out to the family, to their lawyer and to Brian’s sister. But we respected the fact that they didn’t want to participate and that’s it.”
