Doctor breaks down what is going on with Grace’s hair extensions on Love Island All Stars
It’s actually a very common issue
Grace Jackson from Love Island has to be one of the most gorgeous girlies in the UK. She’s a total blonde bombshell, however, viewers have become concerned for her after noticing that she’s wearing what look like very painful hair extensions. We asked a doctor to break down what is actually going on with Grace’s hair extensions on Love Island All Stars, and the issue is actually pretty common.
Dr Nora who specialises in hair and dermatology had some interesting insights to offer about Grace’s hair extensions, noting it as traction alopecia, which is a “common but overlooked issue.”
“This type of hair loss occurs when repeated tension from hairstyles like tight ponytails, braids, or extensions pulls on the hair over time, weakening the follicles and leading to thinning or bald patches. Extensions, while offering temporary volume and length, can exacerbate the issue by adding extra weight and strain, especially if applied too tightly or worn long-term,” Dr Nora explained.
She stressed that “early intervention” is the key to preventing this type of hair damage.
“Reducing tension, giving the scalp regular breaks, and seeking professional advice can help prevent further hair loss and encourage regrowth.”
How to prevent traction alopecia if you’re a hair extensions wearer
Hair extensions wearers should know the dangers of using extensions regularly, but there’s ways to prevent traction alopecia if you’re careful. The first is to make sure you have regular maintenance on your hair every four weeks.

“This limits tensions and pulling/snapping of hair follicles as the extensions loosen. A lot of women will leave it up to 12 weeks and I have seen irreversible alopecia as a result,” Dr Nora warned.
Secondly, if you naturally have thinner hair, do not have heavy extensions put in that will weight your hair down and cause tension on the scalp. Instead, go for shorter, more blended styles. Don’t push your hair to hold something it can’t.
It’s also a good idea to maintain your scalp health with scalp massagers, derma rollers, and rosemary oil. Dr Nora explained this would “increase blood circulation and therefore oxygen to the hair follicles.”
Finally, have regular breaks from hair extensions, which will maintain healthy hair follicle growth and scalp health. Dr Nora said the ideal break time is two to four weeks every six months.
