The uncanny side-by-sides of Apple Cider Vinegar characters and their real life counterparts

Netflix casting has nailed it here

Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix admits it’s taken a real life story, and changed certain bits. It tells the story of disgraced wellness influencer Belle Gibson, who faked cancer.

Belle Gibson is an Australian influencer, who claimed to have cured her terminal brain cancer through alternative therapies and nutrition. In the show, we meet various people who have been affected by her lies. Some of them are based on tragic true stories, whilst others have been made up for the show.

Here’s a rundown of all the characters in Apple Cider Vinegar who are based on real life people, and what their real life counterparts look like.

Kaitlyn Dever as Belle Gibson

Kaitlyn Dever plays Belle Gibson. Belle claimed to have been diagnosed with many cancer pathologies, all of which she said she had managed to cure naturally. She put this down to diet, nutrition and natural supplements. She also claimed she had been donating a huge sum of her profits to charities. But, it was all a lie. Her lies are told, in truth, by Netflix.

It looks as though there’s one particular scene with Kaitlyn in a pink polar neck jumper, which was inspired by an interview with Belle, after she’d been found out. It’s eerily similar.

Alycia Debnam-Carey as Milla Blake

The tragic story of Milla Blake is based on a real person. In the series, Milla Blake is a journalist at Girlfriend, who sadly gets diagnosed with cancer.

It seems Milla Blake from Apple Cider Vinegar is based on Jessica Ainscough, the digital editor of Dolly’s Magazine. She was diagnosed with a type of soft tissue cancer called epithelioid sarcoma, when she was in her early 20s.

According to The Guardian, Jessica also received the same treatment plan as Milla did in Apple Cider Vinegar, with doctors recommending her arm be amputated in order to stop the cancer from spreading.

Aisha Dee as Chanelle

Chanelle is Milla’s best friend, played by Aisha Dee. She is based on Chanelle McAuliffe, who helped blow the whistle on what Belle was doing. According to reports, real Chanelle McAuliffe first met Belle Gibson after being assigned her as an interviewee during a writing internship.

In an interview on This Morning, Chanelle recalled that Belle was “very convincing” but soon the cracks in her lies started to show.

Sibylla Budd as Tara Brown

As mentioned earlier, there was a now famous interview with Belle, in which she wore a pink jumper. This is recreated on Netflix. It featured journalist and presenter for Australian current affairs programme 60 Minutes, Tara Brown. She’s played by Sibylla Budd, who looks A LOT like her real life counterpart.
