In a huge turn, influencer scammer Belle Gibson now has a completely new life and identity

She was ‘adopted’ by an Ethiopian community, until they found out who she really was

Right now, everyone is hooked once again on the real life story of influencer scammer, Belle Gibson. Her story has been dramatised in new Netflix show, Apple Cider Vinegar.

Belle Gibson is an Australian influencer, who claimed to have cured her terminal brain cancer through alternative therapies and nutrition. Everyone wanted to know her story, so she quickly grew a huge platform. Belle created The Whole Pantry mobile app and its cookbook.

Belle claimed to have been diagnosed with many cancer pathologies, all of which she said she had managed to cure naturally. She put this down to diet, nutrition and natural supplements. She also claimed she had been donating a huge sum of her profits to charities. But, it was all a lie.

Belle Gibson was later fined for engaging in misleading or deceptive conduct, and unconscionable conduct in breach of Australian Consumer Law. Here’s a rundown of what we know about what Belle Gibson is up to now.

So, what is Belle Gibson up to now?

After her fraud was exposed in 2015, Belle Gibson briefly went off grid. But since then, more about her life now has become clear.

In 2017, the Australian Federal Court fined her $410k for making false claims about her charitable donations. Reports claim she is yet to pay this, and that her home has been raided to recoup the fines. It’s also been said her fines have gained interest now, which makes them over $500k as it stands.

In 2020 ABC News  reported Belle Gibson has now been adopted into Ethiopia’s Oromo community in Melbourne, with her being quoted as saying her “heart is deeply embedded in the Oromo people”. She aimed to reinvent herself, and leave the scandal behind.

However, in another huge turn, the community then reportedly rejected her, and said any claims she was anything to do with them were a lie. “We hadn’t been aware of this woman, and we do not know her backstory,” a spokesperson is reported to have said. “She is not a community member, and she’s also not working with the community… She has to stop.”

But, it does look as though Gibson *was* briefly part of the community, and was actually rejected once they learned of who she was.

In the ITV documentary Instagram’s Worst Con Artist, it was revealed Gibson had been attending community meetings, calling herself “Sabontu”. But, once the community learned of her fraudulent past, they cut her off. She was “rejected” by members.

Honestly, this was the last thing I was expecting.
