Two Best Actress Oscar nominees feuding after one claims other is ‘tearing down’ Emilia Pérez

Emilia Pérez has barely been free of controversy since the film released last year, and as awards season gets tense its lead actress Karla Sofia Gascón has released a statement clarifying comments she made in which she accused fellow nominee Fernanda Torres of having people on her social media team working to tear down Emilia Pérez. After immense backlash online for the comments she made, where some accused her of violating the Academy Awards code of conduct for Oscar nominees on social media, Gascón has issued a statement clarifying her position.

In a video where she is speaking Spanish with a Brazilian newspaper, Karla Sofia Gascón criticised online campaigns this Oscar season. She says “What I don’t like are social media teams — people who work with these people — trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn’t lead anywhere. You don’t need to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s. I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie. However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Pérez down. That speaks more about their movie than mine.”

Karla Sofia Gascón has violated the Academy’s Oscar rules by accusing nominee Fernanda Torres’ team of spreading hate against her and the cast of Emilia Perez during a Brazilian interview.

After this comment went viral, Gascón gave a new statement to Variety clarifying her position, explaining “I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres and it has been wonderful getting to know her the past few months,” Gascón said in her statement. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.”

She also goes on to say the following about Fernanda Torres, who is nominated in the same category as Gascón for her performance in I’m Still Here. She calls Torres a “wonderful woman and an amazing actress who deserves all the recognition in the world.”

Outrage spread after the first comment in the interview, with calls claiming she broke Oscar rules which she would have if she spoke disparagingly about Torres performance – whereas she criticises and claims the social media team are doing something which is different.
