The Summer I Turned Pretty author explains exactly why there won’t be a season four
She had previously hinted that there would be two more seasons.
As sad as it is to admit, we’re officially in the final chapter of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Season three is already here, and it’s packed with more drama, more heartbreak, and more chaos than ever before. But once this season wraps up, that’s it. No season four, no more Cousins Beach. And now, author and showrunner Jenny Han has explained exactly why.
If you’ve been following the show since day one, you’ll know it’s based on Jenny’s book trilogy, and originally, she did hint that book three might be split into two seasons. So, what changed?
Why isn’t there a season four of The Summer I Turned Pretty?

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jenny said, “Three books, three seasons. It feels right to me.”
That’s the main reason. Each season lines up with one book, season one was The Summer I Turned Pretty, season two followed It’s Not Summer Without You, and season three is based on the final book, We’ll Always Have Summer.
Some viewers were hoping the last book might be stretched out across two seasons, especially since it covers a longer time period than the first two. And Jenny had previously hinted that could happen. But instead, she’s decided to give the final season a few extra episodes instead, 11 in total, to wrap everything up. That’s more than both season one (which had seven episodes) and season two (which had eight).
So no season four, but definitely more content this time around.

Not quite. Jenny teased that the ending might still hold some surprises, even for readers of the books. “There are going to be surprises,” she said. “There are the things that [fans] know and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”
Basically, don’t assume you know exactly how things are going to end, even if you’ve read the books cover to cover.
But could there be a spin-off?

via Amazon Prime
Right now, there are no confirmed plans for a spin-off or extra content in The Summer I Turned Pretty universe. But that doesn’t mean it’s off the table forever. Jenny previously created XO, Kitty as a spin-off from her To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series, so there’s always a chance she might explore more from Cousins Beach one day.
A prequel about Susannah and Laurel’s friendship? More into Steven and Taylor’s relationship? I’m ready when you are, Jenny.
