Right, here’s the actual truth of whether Instagram is getting rid of Highlights
Say it ain’t so
There are mumbles and grumbles on the streets of social media that Instagram might be doing away with Highlights. Since they were introduced, Highlights have become the haven for those who overthink posting on social media. A way to dump a load of holiday pics from the story in a way you can always reflect on. A way for the people who follow you to look over your best story selfies, funniest posts on the story and not in a hardcore commit to the grid kind of way. The news that Instagram might be removing Highlights is harrowing people across the social media landscape – so here’s if Meta is actually getting rid of it or not once and for all.
‘This one is contentious’
The rumours started back in November, when a social media expert Lindsey Gamble posted on Threads that Instagram Story Highlights were moving to a new section in the grid rather than in their current home underneath a user’s bio and profile. Back in November, Gamble said it was about to go live but clearly that isn’t the case.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri then did an AMA on an Instagram Live, where he was asked about if the company is removing Instagram Highlights.
“We’re trying to figure out a way to improve the profile and try to get more of the content above the fold and simplify it,” Mosseri said on an Instagram Live. “And one of the ideas we’re exploring is integrating highlights into the grid.”
He then admitted that “this one is contentious”, and said that the company “might not be able to make it work.”

This would essentially, if Instagram go ahead with it and pull it off, would move highlights into a tab on grid posts, sitting alongside Reels and tagged pics. Not sure how I feel about this personally but it seems like if Instagram do move ahead with this it might not be something that comes any time soon.
The draw of Highlights is that they’re right there under the profile when you look at someone, and have a customisable appearance for people to make a mark. Having it as a separate tab seems to funnel that away if you ask me.
