Exclusive: The real reason Nick had a black eye in The Ultimatum changeover episode

Once you see it you can’t unsee it

If you’re like me, The Ultimatum has had you in an absolute chokehold over the last few weeks and it’s basically impossible to stop watching. With the newest batch of season three episodes releasing yesterday, many people noticed that during the changeover part of The Ultimatum, Nick had a black eye.

When the group of contestants is sat around the dinner table, things start to get heated. It’s pretty hard to miss Nick’s black eye front and centre while he’s arguing with J.R. and Sandy who are gushing over the week they have spent together.

My initial thought was: OMG, there’s been a huge fight between J.R. and Nick over Sandy off-camera. There’s been one brewing for the entire series given how well Sandy and J.R. are getting on. However, that’s not the case at all. In fact, what really happened to Nick’s eye was a lot less dramatic.

Why does Nick have a black eye in The Ultimatum season three?

Nick told The Tab that the reason he had the black eye in the episode is because he had a skateboarding accident. A lot less theatrical than I originally suspected!

Nick and Sandy’s relationship

Nick and Sandy had a fight in episode five of The Ultimatum, where Nick showed up at her door demanding to talk to her. J.R., her current husband on the show, was the one who answered the door and told him to “get the f**k out of here.”

People were particularly annoyed when the heated exchange wasn’t caught by the show’s camera crew and instead was captured on a low-resolution nanny-cam house camera. People were particularly mad about missing what went down in the argument, but Chris Coelen has defended his decision to not be “filming 24/7.”

“We always have a line to them, but they are living their lives,” he explained. “And in this particular program, we do have mounted cameras but we’re not obviously in their apartment with them or at their door 24/7. And so we are, every single day, very conscious of making sure that we are connected to them or checking in with them.

He continued: “We’re apprised to everything that’s going on with them to the extent that they tell us. I think people are aware enough of that, that if they ever feel like they need something, that they know to reach out to us.”
