Omg, Wicked Part Two could have a secret song that people have been demanding since 2003!?

Though it’s still a good year away, Wicked: Part Two could finally feature the Wicked Witch of the East song that has never been included in professional recordings of the stage musical.

Wicked boasts countless details that make it the most iconic film of 2024: A viral meme, a star-studded cast, beautiful sets and costumes, a made-up language, and maybe the most recognisable songs in musical theatre history. Next year’s Wicked: Part Two will be just as dazzling with its own set of dedicated songs.

Now it seems that along with two brand new songs, director Jon Chu is planning on finally introducing our ears to Nessarose’s belting tune, the Wicked Witch of the East.

Nessarose takes centre stage in the Wicked Witch of the East

Warning: Huge spoilers ahead.

In act two of the original stage musical, starring Wicked cameo queens Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, Elphaba returns home to find that her father has died, something we saw in the final few moments of the film. Nessarose is now the top dog in the governor’s office and is not too keen on her sister’s appearance or the fact she hasn’t used her magic to help Nessarose walk.

The powerful song serves to highlight Nessarose’s struggle with both her disability and fragmented relationship with Boq. Elphaba enchants her sister’s slippers so she can walk, but then Boq leaves Nessarose to pursue his love for Glinda. Shocker, she’s not happy and after a failed attempt at magic herself, Nessarose’s sister steps in and turns Boq into the Tin Man to save his life.

Though people who have watched the stage show know and love the song, it was never included in the official album or released after. Considering there are only a few illegal videos on YouTube, people who have watched the film probably don’t know it even exists.

The Wicked Witch of the East song is a beloved favourite amongst musical theatre aficionados, and while we don’t for sure know why it was never included in the original album, some people theorise it’s because of the huge spoilers contained within the lyrics and dialogue.

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, director Jon M. Chu was asked about the inclusion of Nessarose’s song in next year’s sequel.

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to say or not say at this point, because it’s still pretty early,” he said. “But I will say, it’s a great number. And, I think it’s due time that people do get it, so they can hear it over and over and over again.”

I mean, it’s not a direct confirmation but it’s close. Right?
