Here’s all we know about how People picks the Sexiest Man Alive every year
John Krasinski just got announced as the 2024 winner
After all the unfair drama on Twitter about Selena Gomez’s fella Benny Blanco being shortlisted, it’s now been revealed that PEOPLE magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2024 has gone to John Krasinski. Potentially a bit of a rogue choice, really – since I don’t think this year has been one particularly where The Office US and A Quiet Place director heartthrob has really been at the forefront of anyone’s mind. Still, he’s fit. Fair play. But how to PEOPLE magazine pick the Sexiest Man Alive every year? Here’s what we know about the process.
The origins
PEOPLE magazine launched Sexiest Man Alive in 1985 – with the first recipient being Mel Gibson. Since then, the publication has chosen a fella annually and has now even trademarked the title to stop other publications ripping it off and doing their own variants.
But what do we actually know about how PEOPLE chooses? Honestly a fair bit, straight from the horse’s mouth too.
Former editors have shed light on how PEOPLE pick Sexiest Man Alive
In 2012, editor at the time Julie Jordan told USA Today that the team consult the general conversation on social media and in comment selections about men people are loving that year. They also actually ask female celebrities their stance on things.”… we also ask female celebrities — we ask them who their vote would be for sexiest man alive,” she said.
The team also “consult focus groups, which inform discussions among higher-ups in the magazine” and then the editorial staff at PEOPLE give their personal input too.

It’s not just based on looks and appearances. Former editor Dan Wakeford explained the example of Michael B Jordon, the winner in 2020, as someone whose activism in the Black Lives Matter and his campaigning for women’s rights played a big part in his victory. As well as him being handsome, of course.
The winner also has to be enthusiastic and willing to participate in taking the title and doing a photoshoot for it, and the winner’s interview.
