Cardiff half marathon runner dies shortly after crossing the finish line

They collapsed as they finished the race

A runner in Cardiff’s half marathon has died after collapsing at the finish line of the event.

The race hosted over 29,000 participators in its biggest ever event, with the streets of the city flooded with runners over a 13 mile stretch.

As reported by Wales Online, a spokeswoman for Run 4 Wales said: “The runner was immediately attended to by the medical emergency team at the finish line before being taken to University Hospital of Wales, where they later passed away.”

According to a Run 4 Wales representative, no further details of the runner would be released in respect for their family.

The Mirror reports the spokeswoman said: “This is a terrible tragedy and our deepest sympathies go out to the runner’s family. In respect for the participant’s family at this difficult time, no further details will be released.”

In recent years there have been three deaths after the event. In 2019, 35-year-old Nicholas Beckley died after collapsing at the finish, with Cardiff-born Ben McDonald, 25, and Dean Fletcher, 32, from Exeter, sadly dying in 2018. Both McDonald and Fletcher went into cardiac arrest within minutes of each other after crossing the finish line.
